MITCHELL – Dakota Wesleyan University will host the 17th annual South Central South Dakota Regional Science and Engineering Fair on Tuesday, March 24, in the Christen Family Recreation/Wellness Center.

The competition includes students in grades six through 12, from 34 schools in 17 South Dakota counties. Projects will be on display for viewing by the public from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

“Last year we won the Air Force First Place Award at the International Science and Engineering Fair,” said Mike Farney, professor of mathematics at DWU and science fair director. “This year we’ll have the Ridiculously Simple Charge Detector, the Ridiculously Simple Motor, and some projects that aren’t so simple, such as a new system for reducing tailpipe emissions. I’ve surveyed hundreds of science projects in the past two weeks, and I’m pleased to say that knowledge of the scientific method is higher than it’s ever been.”

Students participating in this regional event will bring projects that have already won in science fairs at local schools. This year's fair includes 154 projects produced by 247 students.

More than 64 judges will select the winners; one group and two individual winners will advance to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair May 10-16 in Reno, Nev. Awards to be given at the conclusion of the fair include cash, certificates, college scholarships, plaques, medals, trophies, and recognition by major industry and the U.S. Armed Forces.

In addition to DWU, sponsors include The Daily Republic, Your Touchtone Energy Cooperatives, Sixth District Medical Society, Logan Luxury Theatre and Twin City Fan Companies LTD.
