Jan. 6, 2012 DWU Choral Union welcomes community membersMITCHELL — The DWU Choral Union will begin rehearsals on Tuesday, Jan. 9 at 7 p.m. The Choral Union is a choir consisting of DWU students, faculty and staff members and Mitchell-area community members. With the start of a new semester, the group invites additional singers to participate. Membership to the DWU Choral Union is open to any singer high school age or older. The choir is especially in need of tenors and basses. Community members pay a $20-$30 music fee for the semester. Rehearsals will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays. Those interested in the DWU Choral Union may contact Dr. Clint Desmond at cldesmon@dwu.edu or at 995-2676. The Choral Union will perform “A Salute to Broadway” on Feb. 16. This performance will feature music from Les Miserables and also from composers Stephen Sondheim and Rodgers and Hammerstein. Some members of the Choral Union will sing solos and ensembles at the performance. The Choral Union will also join forces with the Wesleyan Choir on April 22 to perform two masterpieces of American music: Bernstein's Chichester Psalms and both sets of Aaron Copland's Old American Songs. Bernstein is best known for having composed “West Side Story” and these psalms have a hint of this style. Copland's music is pure Americana with elements of folk, country, gospel, and spirituals. |
