Dan Hoyt ’40, Winona,
Minn., celebrated his 90th birthday March 29, 2008.
Marion Steuerwold Pech c’43, Denver,
received a bachelor’s degree in music and a
master’s degree in elementary education at Denver University.
After teaching music for 34 years, she earned a master’s
degree in teaching English as a second language at the School
for International Training in Brattleboro, Vt., and taught
in other countries.
Theodore Smith ’44 published his second
book, “Kinship and the Dark Side of Man.”

LaValle and Patricia True Ptak ’59,
Cave Creek, Ariz., do premarital counseling.
They celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary on May 15,

will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary this summer.
June Wolf Briggs ’62, Las
Cruces, N.M., was recognized at Trinity Lutheran Church in
Las Cruces for 25 years as organist, choir director and director
of music programs. She has been responsible for starting
many new music ministry programs, the latest being a music
class for babies six months to two years and their parents.
Paul H. Carlson ’62 retired from the
history department at Texas Tech University and published
his 17th book, “The Centennial History of Lubbock: Hub
City of the Plains,” in December 2008.
JoAnne Jenson Dickinson ’62,
Yankton, works at the Benedictine Peace Center/Sacred
Heart Monastery.
Aleene Webb Henson ’64 lives
in Mayflower, Ark.
Beverly Watkins Jorgenson ’64 will
begin her 12th year of teaching at Rochester-John
Marshall High School. Beverly and her husband, Terry
’68, live in Kasson, Minn.
Jack Montgomery ex’64, Culver,
Ind., tied the state slalom water skiing record in his age
class. He holds six state records and won a state jump
title last year.
Charlotte Nold ’64 will celebrate
20 years as pastor of St. John UCC in Chicago.
Gary Goldammer ex’65 works as a tourism
consultant near Tilford/Rapid City during the summer months.
Gary and Donna May Goldammer ’70 stay
at Hart Ranch camping resort during that time.
Johannas Asmussen Golden Jordan
’65, Bemidji, Minn., retired in 2008 as professor
of education after 42 years of teaching. She is studying
to be a priest in the Episcopal Church.
Peggy Rosenkranz ’65 retired after
25 years as founding artistic director of Centennial Children’s
Chorus in Fort Collins, Colo. She received the Peace
Medallion Award from Arts Alive for outstanding contributions
in promoting the arts in Fort Collins.
Judie Van Winkle Stewart ’65,
Kalispell, Mont., visited England, Scotland and Ireland.
She serves as secretary of the Montana Retired Educators Association.
Linda Jenson Shaw ’65 and her husband,
Derald, live in Owatonna, Minn. They have two young
grandchildren.
Penny Fritze-Tietz ’65, Monticello,
Minn., published a trilogy of mysteries, “The Pauline
Epistle,” a story about what might happen if an extant
Pauline epistle is found in which Paul supports and encourages
a house-church of women.
Loretta Nelson Medeck ’66 retired
after 30 years in special education.

| Harold Reese ’70, Las
Vegas, was named Wal-Mart’s 2008-09 Middle School Physical
Education Teacher of the Year in the Clark County School District.
Keith ’71 and Barb Miller
Bullock ’71 live in Ankeny, Iowa. Barb
retired due to health reasons after 33 years of service as
pastor to 13 UMC and UCC churches. Keith is a speech
language pathologist at Woodward Developmental Center.
Devonia Puetz Oster ’71,
Mitchell, is retired but volunteers at Avera Queen of Peace
Hospital.
Rex Piercy ’71 teaches at Garrett-Evangelical
Theological Seminary in Evanston, Ill., and is in his fifth
year at Congregational UCC of Arlington Heights. He
will lead a 14-day tour of Israel, Jordan and Egypt in October.
Jim ’72 and Marie Logan Cissell
MH’73 live in Rapid City. Marie teaches
in the SDSU West River Nursing program. Jim received
his Doctor of Ministry degree in 2005 at North American Baptist
Seminary in Sioux Falls. In 2006 and 2007, he presented
theology papers at the Wesleyan Theological Society’s
annual meeting. In 2007, Jim traveled to Liverpool,
England, and presented a paper, “A Faith to Die For:
Being a Charles Wesley Evangelical in the 21st Century,”
at Hope University as part of a celebration of the 300th anniversary
of Charles Wesley’s birth. He is scheduled to
present a paper at the Wesleyan Theological Society’s
2009 meeting in Anderson, Ind.

Franck ’74 live in Springfield, Mo., and they
have a new granddaughter.
Ida McBride ’75, Spring Creek, Nev.,
lost her husband, Glen Deming, on March 3, 2009.
Judy Jensen Spurrell Swensen ex’75,
Wakonda, is a certified pharmacy technician.
Susan Coughlin ’78 lost her husband,
Joe, on Nov. 20, 2008.

Dill ’79 live in Lakewood,
Calif. Ruth is a special education program specialist
for Paramount School District. Dave is a special education
administrator for the Los Angeles Unified School District.
Pat ’79 and Lynn Hatwan live
in Lincoln, Neb. Pat is working on
a doctorate in natural health to be followed with a doctorate
in alternative cancer prevention strategies and techniques
from Clayton College of Natural Health.
Meral Sertoglu Sepin ’79
returned to Turkey after she graduated and worked at a bank
as a foreign transaction manager. In 2000, she retired
and moved her family to the United States.

Norma Jay AA’81, Yates
Center, Kan., published a book, “Poems of Praise and
Inspiration.” Norma is a retired RN, raised five
children and helped her husband, Charles, establish and pastor

Heather Kaye ’82, King
George, Va., is a senior program analyst for Delta Resources
Inc.
Joel Black ’83 has been named chief
operating officer of the U.S. Bank Wealth Management Group,
which includes The Private Client Reserve, U.S. Bancorp Investments
Inc. and U.S. Bancorp Insurance Services, LLC. Black
began working in the financial services industry in 1986 and
served in a variety of senior leadership roles in the wealth
management division of UBS Financial Services. Before
that, he handled financial and administrative affairs for
the Private Client Services division at Piper Jaffray, joining
that organization when it was part of U.S. Bancorp.
In addition to his B.A. from DWU, Black earned his M.B.A.
from the Carlson School of Management at the University of
Minnesota. Black works at U.S. Bancorp’s corporate
headquarters in downtown Minneapolis. He and his wife,
Linda ’79, and their family live in
the Twin Cities.
Henry Hughes ’87, Falls City, Ore.,
is an associate professor of English at Western Oregon University.
He published a new collection of poems, “Moist Meridian,”
and he guest edits for “Leviathan: A Journal of Melville
Studies.”
Ernie Bork ’88, Mount Vernon, has
an 18-year-old son, Hunter, who recently lost his leg due
to osteosarcoma cancer. Hunter plans to attend DWU in
the fall.
Marc Hicks ’88, Flemington,
N.J., is a district manager and financial planner for Waddell
& Reed Inc.
Duane Wince ’88, Rapid
City, is starting his ninth year with the Douglas School District,
his third year as a seventh grade social studies teacher.
Darla Hadrick ’89, Yuba
City, Calif., graduated from California State University at
Long Beach with a Master of Science degree in emergency services
administration. She works for the Sutter County Sheriff’s
Department.

Lori Wehleander ’92 is a transition
liaison with Black Hills Special Services Cooperative, where
she helps students in special education, ages 16 to 21, prepare
for adulthood.
Gen Bockwoldt Clark ’94, Lakehurst,
N.J., Naval Air Engineering Station, is a lieutenant in the
United States Navy. She serves as a chaplain.
Brad Young ’94 teaches in Belle Fourche,
six of the last 12 years in special education.
Benjamin Barondeau ’97 earned his
master’s degree in English literature from South Dakota
State University in 2008.
Brian Daughters ’97, MA’07,
Mitchell, is the K-12 principal for the Burke
School District.
Steph Campbell Fagerhaug ’97,
Sioux Falls, is a volunteer for Father’s Grace,
an organization that helps with back child support; is involved
with Broken Tree Ministries, an organization that helps abused
and hurting clergy heal; and helps Stuff Counts, an organization
that does inventory for home businesses and churches in case
of fire.
Kevin Holmes ’97, Limestone,
Tenn., is the staff chaplain at James H. Quiellen VA Medical
Center in Mountain Home, Tenn.

and Bobbi Jo Roscoe-Bryan ’00,
Appleton, Minn., had a baby in July 2008. Rohan
is on his second tour overseas with the Minnesota Army National
Guard.
Alison Mosel ’01, Laramie,
Wyo., is the head women’s basketball coach and the women’s
golf athletic trainer at the University of Wyoming.
Olivia Puffer ’01, Blair, Neb., is
a middle school/high school guidance counselor and middle
school girls’ basketball coach in the West Harrison
School District in Mondamin, Iowa.
Paula Larson ’02, Hermitage,
Tenn., works for the Brownfields Program with the Tennessee
Department of Environment and Conservation’s Division
of Remediation.
The Rev. William “Skip” White ’02
published “Carry Me Not,” a Western set in his
home state of North Dakota. The book tells the story
of Emmett McCall, a preacher who arrives in the town of Revelation
and witnesses its coming apart following a murder there.
McCall has no desire to make this frontier town his home and
struggles with his personal feelings and those of the townspeople
in turmoil after the murder. It takes an unlikely character,
some creative detective work and turning of events before
things start looking hopeful. Several churches across
the country have chosen the book for study and discussion
groups. “Carry Me Not” is available via
major online booksellers and from the DWU Campus Bookstore.
White is a United Methodist pastor living in Friendsville,
Tenn., with his wife, Victoria.
Victoria Drefs ’04, Aviano
Air Base, Italy, has served three years in the United States
Air Force.
Tera Ellefson Koupal ’04 lives
in Wagner.
Jessica Farrar Lucas ’04,
Platte, is a sixth-grade teacher
in Plankinton. She is pursuing her master’s degree
in education at DWU.
Becky Swanson ’04, Bloomington, Ind.,
is working on a doctoral degree in mathematics at the University
of Indiana. She received the Rothrock Award for excellence
in teaching.
Terrin Johnson ’05,
Fremont, Neb., earned her education specialist degree
in school psychology at the University of Nebraska Kearney.
Karl Kroger ’05 was chosen as one
of six Emory University students to receive the school’s
2009 Humanitarian Award. Kroger was recognized for his
work as an advocate for Troy Davis, a current Georgia death
row inmate convicted of the 1989 murder of Savannah police
officer, Mark MacPhail. Currently in his final year
of the Master of Divinity program at Emory’s Candler
School of Theology in Atlanta, Kroger has organized a broad
network of supporters across campus and community lines to
bring attention to the Davis case, spearheading banner drops
from railroad bridges and overpasses to raise awareness, and
leading prayer vigils on the steps of the state capitol.
Chris ’05 and Tammy Westall
Hockley ’05, Ames, Iowa, are
back after teaching in Bahrain. Chris is pursuing his
candidacy while interning as the campus ministry associate
at Collegiate United Methodist Church/Wesley Foundation, seminary
to follow. Tammy is teaching at the high school and
doing private voice lessons.

Falls, is pursuing a master in business administration degree
with a concentration in human resource management at Colorado
Tech.
Abbey Beck AA’08 is working at Sanford
Hospital in Sioux Falls as a registered nurse.

Alaska, is a high school math, science and PE teacher with

Robert Tatina, biology professor emeritus,
published two articles in “The Prairie Naturalist”
(June issue). One is about a plant newly reported for
South Dakota, and the other is about the foraging behavior
of fox squirrels.
DWU President Robert Duffett awarded Norman Borlaug
an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters at Borlaug’s home
in Texas in December. At Commencement in May, Duffett
acknowledged the award, and told of Borlaug’s work in
helping Mexico to become agriculturally self-sufficient, calling
him the “father of the green revolution.”
Borlaug is credited for agronomy work throughout the world.
He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1970, the 1977 U.S. Presidential
Medal of Freedom and many other awards throughout his career.
He also founded the World Food Prize.
Phillis Wooner of Longmont,
