Deb
Harrington Cap '73
2003 Outstanding Service to Alma Mater
Deb Cap is an administrative assistant in the institutional advancement
office at Dakota Wesleyan, a position she has held since June of 1992.
Known for her hard work and dedication to DWU, Cap received the Presidential
Award for Outstanding Service in 1998.
Cap's coworkers say she starts her workday hours before others arrive
on campus and is always willing to help someone else even though her plate
is full. Students will often stay in touch with Cap long after they leave
DWU because of the impact she had on their lives.
"She has been like a second mom to many of her work study students,"
says her nominator, Wendy Mead Nehring '98, a former work study student.
"She is respected by students, faculty and staff. She is an amazing
woman who gives 110 percent to DWU and its students, faculty, staff, alumni
and friends."
Cap received her degree from DWU in 1973 and then took a job with Herter's
Inc. Before joining the Wesleyan staff, she worked for Culhane's Dairy
as a bookkeeper and then office manager.
As a student, Cap was a tutor in the math department, worked as a secretary
in the English department, was on the homecoming committee and was an
assistant editor of the Phreno Cosmian. She was named to Who's Who Among
Students in American Universities and Colleges, was a candidate for Miss
Wesleyan and was inducted into the Sigma Tau Delta and Phi Kappa Phi honor
societies.
Cap may have started a long-standing family tradition when she decided
on DWU for her undergraduate degree. Her daughters, five cousins and a
sister-in-law have attended or graduated from Wesleyan. She is married
to Larry Cap and they have two grown daughters, Amy Bailey AA'98 and Devon
Hinckley '01.
