Art workshops for high schools Career Possibilities
The
art department is restructuring with a focus on mastering the skills
and craft of painting and drawing. A student with developed fundamentals
will have the ability to pursue a wide variety of directions---from
representation and impressionistic to post-modern and abstract.
Those who want to teach K-8 or high school art will find that the education and art departments work together closely to insure a solid education for future teachers. In the tradition of liberal arts, the department offers basic courses in art to meet general education requirements and to broaden a student’s field of knowledge regardless of his or her major. Coursework is offered in both traditional and digital photography. We take full advantage of our multi-media center to teach students interested in the many occupational opportunities based on computer generated design, animation, video and graphic design. The art department has courses in art appreciation and history. Unique to DWU is a focus on art of the region. The Dakota Discovery Museum, located across the lawn from the Visual Arts Center at DWU, houses a significant art collection featuring Oscar Howe, Harvey Dunn, James Earle Fraser, Charles Hargens and Gutzon Borglum.
