Patrick Belling is entering his fifth season as the head coach of the Tiger cross country and track and field programs. During his time at DWU, Belling has coached numerous DWU athletes to school records, All-GPAC and All-American honors, and the NAIA National Championships. In the 2009 cross country season, Belling helped senior Thomas Madut qualify for the NAIA Cross Country National Meet for the second consecutive season. In the 2009-10 indoor track season, Belling coached junior Derik Fossum to a Great Plains Athletic Conference Championship in the triple jump. Fossum, along with Isaac Van Dyke (5,000-meter run) and Frank Thompson (high jump), made the NAIA National Indoor Track and Field Championships for the Tiger men. On the women’s side, Alyssa Christianson and Natalie Wipf qualified in the 200-meter dash. Wipf qualified in the 400-meter dash, and that duo, along with Tamika Irvin and Kailey Hunhoff, also qualified in the 1,600-meter relay. The Tiger men had three All-GPAC selections and had eight performances that ranked in the top 10 in DWU history. The women’s team set six school records, had two individual All-GPAC selections and one All-Conference relay, and had 17 performances that ranked in the top 10 in school history. In the 2010 outdoor track season, Belling helped lead Madut to a third-place finish in the men’s marathon at the NAIA National Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Madut is the school’s first outdoor All-American since 2004. The women’s 400-meter relay squad took first at the GPAC Championships. They, along with the 1,600-meter relay team, Wipf and Gail McIntyre, also qualified for the outdoor national meet. On the men’s side, Madut, Van Dyke, Thompson and Fossum all qualified for the national meet. The women earned All-GPAC honors in six events, set six school records and had 13 performances in the top 10 in school history. The men earned five All-GPAC honors, set three DWU records and had 10 performances make the school’s top-10 list. Overall, Belling had individuals qualify for the national meets in 14 individual events and in three relays. He also had 17 All-GPAC selections in 2009-10 and six NAIA Scholar-Athletes, the most during his tenure with the Tigers. In his three seasons at Dakota Wesleyan, Belling has coached a total of 34 All-GPAC selections, 14 NAIA Scholar-Athletes and two GPAC Athletes-of-the-Week. He came to DWU after three seasons as the track and field graduate assistant coach at the University of South Dakota. He worked with the sprinters and was part of the Coyote outdoor squad that finished fourth in the nation, the second-best outdoor finish in school history. Belling, an Omaha, Neb., native, was a three-time NCAA All-American sprinter at USD and a member of NCC Championship teams. He was a member of the 4x400-meter relay squad that finished sixth at the 2002 NCAA Division II Outdoor National Championships. Belling was also a member of the 4x100-meter relay team that set a state record with a time of 40.80 in 2001-02. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education from USD in December 2003 and completed his Master of Arts degree in athletic administration from USD in May 2006. A graduate of Omaha Roncalli Catholic High School, Belling was a Nebraska Class “B” State Champion in the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash and 400-meter dash at the 1999 Nebraska State Track Meet. His time of 21.92 won the 200-meter dash All-Class Gold Medal that year, and his time of 10.79 in the 100-meter dash set a new Class “B” state meet record. Belling currently lives in Mitchell.
