KENOSHA, Wis. – Dakota Wesleyan University junior Thomas Madut picked a good day to run the fastest time of his Tiger career. Madut set a new personal record Saturday at the 2008 NAIA Men’s Cross Country National Championships at Wayne E. Dannehl Cross Country Course in Kenosha, Wis.

Madut finished the 8K course in 26:14.6, which beat his previous personal best by nearly 13 seconds. Madut finished 119th in the 331-runner field, and he missed a spot in the top 100 by 14 seconds.

NAIA Men's Championship Results

The performance at nationals caps an incredible season for Madut, who was named to the GPAC All-Conference team for his performance at the conference meet. He was the first Tiger runner to earn All-Conference honors and qualify for nationals since 2004, and as the season wore on, he seemed to set a new personal best every time out.

The men’s race was won by Azusa Pacific’s (Calif.) Aron Rono for the second-straight year with a time of 23:45.8. The second-place finisher, Nikolaus Schweikert, led Malone College to the Men’s National Championship with 61 points, while Azusa Pacific (118) finished second. Malone’s Jack Hazen earned 2008 NAIA Men’s Cross Country Coach-of-the-Year honors.

Concordia University was the highest GPAC finisher in sixth place, with GPAC Runner-of-the-Year Zach Meineke leading the way with a 15th-place finish. Doane College finished 25th as a team, and Black Hills State represented South Dakota well with an eighth-place finish.

Azusa Pacific captured the NAIA Women’s National Championship in the 5K race earlier Saturday morning. Alissa McKraig from Indiana Tech won the individual title, and Azusa Pacific coach Preston Grey was named the 2008 NAIA Women’s Cross Country Coach-of-the-Year.

The Concordia women’s team was the top GPAC finisher in 17th place, and Doane was three spots back in 20th. The Black Hills state women finished 15th. GPAC Women’s Runner-of-the-Year Jen Kempers from Dordt was the top GPAC individual with her ninth-place finish.
