As John Hemenway enters his fifth season as the head men’s basketball coach at Dakota Wesleyan University in 2009-10, his Tigers are currently in the midst of the most successful stretch in the program’s storied history. DWU has won at least 24 games and has received an at-large bid to the NAIA Division II Men’s Basketball National Tournament in each of the last three seasons. After four seasons, Hemenway has compiled a career record of 87-43 (.669). Hemenway currently has the fourth-most wins of any DWU men’s basketball coach and the third-best winning percentage. This season, he’ll need just 13 wins to become the fourth Tiger coach to reach 100-career victories, and he could become the fastest coach to reach that milestone. The Tigers have won more games over the past three seasons (73) than in any other three-year stretch in Dakota Wesleyan’s 92-year basketball history. Hemenway’s Tigers are coming off their best season in his four years at the helm. In 2008-09, DWU posted a 25-9 overall record, which is the second-most wins in school history and the most of the Hemenway era, and it finished second in the Great Plains Athletic Conference with a 14-4 league record. The 14 conference wins are a new school record, and the second-place finish is DWU’s best showing since the GPAC was formed in 2000. The Tigers also reached the GPAC Men’s Basketball Postseason Championship game for the first time, and they received their third straight bid to the NAIA National Tournament. This is the first time in school history DWU has won 20 or more games in three consecutive seasons, and it hasn’t been to three straight NAIA National Tournaments since 1939-41. The Tigers were ranked in the Top 25 in every NAIA Division II Coaches’ Poll except one, reaching as high as No. 8 and finishing at No. 14. The 2008-09 Tigers set new school records for rebounds in a season (1,298) and total points in a season (2,725), and they matched a GPAC record by placing six players on the All-Conference teams. DWU also had one player receive All-America honors and one player earn the NAIA Scholar-Athlete award. Three consecutive players on the team earned GPAC Player-of-the-Week honors in late January, which is another conference record. In his four years at DWU, Hemenway has coached three NAIA DII All-Americans, two GPAC Players-of-the-Year, six NAIA Scholar-Athletes, 11 All-GPAC selections and nine GPAC Players-of-the-Week. In addition, he was selected as the GPAC Coach-of-the-Year in 2006-07. Hemenway’s teams have upset the nation’s top-ranked team twice and his teams are 41-6 on their home court at the World’s Only Corn Palace over the past three seasons. The Tigers won the 2007 Saint Xavier Christmas Tournament Championship, and they spent a total of 31 weeks ranked in the NAIA DII Top 25. Hemenway came to DWU from the University of South Dakota, where he served as the assistant coach for Dave Boots. During his three seasons assisting the program, USD posted a 68-25 record and won the 2005 North Central Conference Tournament. In 2005, the Coyotes set a school record for wins in a season with 27 and advanced to the NCAA Division II National Tournament Regional Final. In 2004, the Coyotes posted a 22-10 record and earned an at-large berth to the NCAA Division II National Tournament. Before returning to his alma mater, Hemenway spent two seasons at Chaminade University in Honolulu. As the assistant coach, he helped head coach Aaron Griess and the Silverswords to a 32-22 record and the school’s first consecutive winning campaigns since 1985-87. Hemenway got his start in the coaching profession at Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa, where he spent four seasons as an assistant coach. He helped head coach Jerry Schmutte to a 65-44 record, including a 16-game winning streak during the 1998-99 and 1999-2000 seasons. Hemenway was a two-time All-North Central Conference performer at the University of South Dakota. He was named to the All-North Central Region First Team in 1996 and was a second team honoree in 1995. Following his senior season, Hemenway was named to the CoSIDA NCAA Division II All-American Team. He received the Jon Van Why Award, honoring the most outstanding athlete for the year at USD in 1996 and served as the Coyotes’ cocaptain during the 1995 and 1996 seasons. When he finished his eligibility, Hemenway started 84 consecutive games at point guard for the Coyotes, set USD single season records for assists with 197 and free throws made in a season with 179, and held a career free-throw percentage of .870. He finished his collegiate career as USD’s all-time leader in wins and his teams posted an overall record of 89-25. He helped the Coyotes to two North Central Conference championships and two NCAA Division II Elite 8 appearances. Last fall Hemenway was inducted into the University of South Dakota Coyote Hall of Fame. Hemenway graduated from USD in 1996 with a Bachelor of Science degree in education and received his Master of Arts degree in health, physical education and recreation in 1998. Hemenway is married to the former Jessica Maddox, and they live in Mitchell with their 2-year-old son, Jack, and their newborn daughter Katherine.
Andrew Duffy joins the Dakota Wesleyan University men’s basketball coaching staff in 2009-10 as the team’s graduate assistant coach. Duffy will serve as Hemenway’s top full-time assistant, and his experience and knowledge will be a huge asset to the Tigers. Duffy will be involved in all aspects of coaching the team from day-to-day operations, scouting and preparation, game plans, practice set up, travel and some administrative duties in the DWU basketball. Duffy comes to DWU after four years as a student manager for one of the best NCAA Division I men’s basketball programs in the country, Villanova University in Villanova, Penn. During his four years serving under head coach Jay Wright, the Wildcats went 99-34 and received a bid to the NCAA tournament each year. Villanova reached the Sweet 16 three times, the Elite Eight twice and the Final Four once in Duffy’s tenure. His duties included practice set-up/clean up, video taping, stats, assisting coaches with drills and individual workouts, managing team gear and providing office support. Duffy was promoted to Head Senior Manager during his final season. The Rockaway, N.J., native has also served as a manager for the USA Men’s Basketball team at the Pan American Games in Rio, Brazil, in 2007, and he has worked at numerous prestigious basketball camps, including Villanova, Rutgers University and the University of Virginia. Duffy is a 2009 graduate of Villanova, with a Bachelor of Science in finance and a minor in criminal justice. He is a 2005 honors graduate of Morris Knolls High School where he was a four-year member of the basketball team and a team captain as a senior. Duffy also played AAU basketball and he helped the Morris County Bulls with the 2004 AAU Division II National Championship. At Dakota Wesleyan, Duffy is pursuing his Master’s Degree in educational policy and administration. He plans to graduate in May 2011. His parents are John and Lucy Duffy and he has one brother, John-Lucas. Duffy currently lives in Mitchell.
Matt Culhane is entering his fifth year as a volunteer assistant coach for his alma mater. Culhane brings a good basketball mind and plenty of ideas to the Tiger coaching staff. He has a knack for late-game situations and recognizing adjustments, and he helps head coach John Hemenway with substitutions and matchups during games. He was a three-year basketball letterwinner for Dakota Wesleyan from 2001-03. As a senior, he started 21 games, averaging 7.6 points and 1.8 rebounds per game. He earned a bachelor’s degree in business management from DWU in 2004. Culhane is a Mitchell High School alum, where he played basketball for the Kernels and head coach Gary Munsen. Culhane is the owner and operator of the Thunderbird Lodge in Mitchell. He lives in Mitchell with his wife, Rebecca, and two daughters, Logan and Quinn.
Clint Farrar is entering his second season as a student assistant coach for the Dakota Wesleyan University men’s basketball team. Farrar made the transition from a Tiger player to coach before the 2008-09 season. In addition to his coaching responsibilities, Farrar will handle the team’s film coordination this season, and he will also be involved in scouting throughout the season to help the Tigers prepare for upcoming opponents. He also served as an assistant coach for the Tiger women’s basketball team for two seasons. Farrar is pursuing an elementary education degree at Dakota Wesleyan, and he was also a three-year member of the Tiger men’s golf team. The Hurley, S.D., native was an All-Conference selection in basketball and football for Hurley High School, and he was a state qualifier in golf. Farrar currently lives in Mitchell.
