Mavericks Pull Away From Tigers

Mitchell, S.D. — The University of Minnesota, Mankato used a 9-2 run to end the first half to lead by nine at halftime, and Dakota Wesleyan could get no closer as the Mavericks earned an 80-60 victory over the Tigers in women’s basketball action on Saturday at the Corn Palace.

Minnesota State, an NCAA Division II school in the North Central Conference, improves to 9-1 on the season, while the Tigers drop to 2-11 overall.

Adria Pazour hit a lay-up at the 4:32 mark of the first half to make the score 27-25 Mavericks, but Minnesota State hit five baskets to close out the half and make the score 38-29 at halftime.

DWU got within eight points right at the start of the second half on a Kara Overweg lay-up, but the Tigers never got within single digits again.

The Mavericks shot 43.5 percent from the field but committed only 10 turnovers.

DWU outrebounded the Mavericks 40-34, but the Tigers were forced into 24 turnovers. DWU shot 42.6 percent from the floor and they went 10-13 from the free throw line.

Sarah Mortenson was the only Tiger to reach double figures with 13 points. Adria Pazour added eight points and nine rebounds, while Ashley Johnson had nine points and six rebounds.

Minnesota State was led by Flecia Foster who scored 14 points. Freshman guard Tiffany Moe added 13 points.

The Tigers will be off for Christmas break and return to action on Dec. 28 when they face Oklahoma City University in Las Vegas, Nev.
