Nov. 4, 2006 DWU Men Improve to 3-0 With Weekend Sweep Mitchell, S.D. — Dakota Wesleyan jumped out to a 22-point first half lead and never looked back as the Tiger’s defeated South Dakota Tech, 89-74, in NAIA men’s basketball action on Saturday night (Nov. 4) at the Corn Palace in Mitchell, S.D. The Tigers went 2-0 during their home opening weekend, and improved to 3-0 early on in the 2006-07 season. DWU led 36-14 at the 4:51 mark in the first half, but the Hardrockers outscored the Tigers 13-1 to end the half with the score 37-27. S.D. Tech got within 37-33 just a minute into the second half, but that was as close as they could get. DWU went on an 8-0 run to get the lead back to double digits and cruised in for the 15-point victory. The Tigers had a balanced scoring attack with four players reaching double figures in scoring. Marcus Vontz came off the bench to lead DWU with 21 points going 10-13 from the free throw line. Preston Broughton scored 17 points, with Jesse Block and Greg Walker adding 11 and 10 points, respectively. Block led the team with six rebounds, while Andrew Lasche had a team-high six assists. The key stat of the game was DWU going 36-43 from the free throw line, while the Hardrockers attempted just 13 free throws. Casey Schmitz led S.D. Tech with 16 points. The Tigers hit the road to face two more Dakota Athletic Conference opponents next weekend as DWU travels to Valley City State University on Friday (Nov. 10) and Jamestown College (Nov. 11) on Saturday. |
