Tucker Sparks Tigers to Win

Seward, Neb. — Backup quarterback Tanner Tucker entered the game in the second half and threw two touchdown passes to lead Dakota Wesleyan University to a 21-7 victory over Concordia University in the final game of the 2006 season. The Tigers finish the 2006 season with a 4-6 overall record, a three game improvement from 2005.

DWU jumped out to a 7-0 lead early in the game after Derek Washington blocked a Bulldog punt on the first possession of the game. The Tigers got the ball at the Concordia 16-yard line and marched down to the one, where Jon Doom hit Will Walker for a touchdown pass. The score remained 7-0 at halftime.

In the third quarter, the Bulldogs got on the board as JaMaine Lewis broke free on a 95-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 7-7.

After getting dinged up on a quarterback sack, Doom left the game and Tucker came in as the signal-caller. He promptly marched the Tigers in for a TD, as he found Jon Young for a five yard TD pass. Tucker added a 26 yard run on an option play to help set up the score.

Tyron Arrington, who set a new DWU single season record for receptions with 61, set up the Tigers next score with a 57-yard punt return down to the Concordia 26-yard line.

From there, Tucker found Bubba Slaba for a 21-yard TD reception to give the Tigers a 21-7 lead and seal the victory.

Tucker finished the game, 7-14 with 55 yards and two TDs, and 26 rushing yards. Arrington had eight receptions for 22 yards. He breaks David Kimura’s record of 60 that he set back in 2000. Rodney Moore led the Tigers in rushing with 33 yards.

Defensively, Eric Washington led the team with seven tackles (6 solo) and a pass breakup. Alyx Allen and Antonio Rice each had quarterback sacks, while Steve Viereck had an interception return for 57 yards.
