24th-Ranked NWU Defeats DWU, 38-18

Lincoln, Neb. — Nebraska Wesleyan University ran for 253 yards and forced four turnovers as the 24th-ranked Prairie Wolves defeated Dakota Wesleyan University, 38-18, in Great Plains Athletic Conference football action on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 21) at Abel Stadium in Lincoln, Neb. NWU improves to 5-2 overall while the Tigers fall to 3-5.

In a game that began with snow flurries falling, NWU led 17-6 at halftime. The Prairie Wolves took advantage of a DWU fumble to get on the board first. Scott Cook connected on a 23-yard field goal to make the score 3-0 at the end of the first quarter.

The NWU offensive line began to take control in the second quarter as the Prairie Wolves scored two touchdowns on the ground. Jim Tvrdy scored from 10 yards out while Kory Kahlendt plunged for a two-yard TD to put NWU up 17-0.

DWU got on the board right before the end of the first half. DWU started their drive with 1:07 to play before the half on its own 42-yard line. Jon Doom found Tyron Arrington for 19 yards, then hit Bubba Slaba for six yards to get down to the 33-yard line. With five seconds remaining, Doom and Slaba connected again for a 35-yard TD strike. The 2-point PAT attempt failed to make it 17-6 at half.

NWU scored on its second possession of the third quarter after forcing a fumble on a DWU receiver at the 11-yard line. The Prairie Wolves used three plays before Zac Rabe hit Steve Fox for a 3 yard TD pass.

The Tigers got their first break of the game after Paul Wilson recovered a fumble on a punt to set up DWU at the NWU 26 yard line. Rodney Moore got the first of his two rushing TDs on a 1-yard TD run on the first play of the fourth quarter to pull the Tigers with 12 points.

The two teams would then trade touchdowns before NWU scored in the final seconds to make the final score 38-18.

For DWU, quarterback Jon Doom threw for a career-high 216 yards despite cold and windy conditions in Lincoln. He finished 23-40 with a TD, but he did throw two interceptions. Tyron Arrington led the receivers with eight catches for 58 yards. Bubba Slaba finished with four receptions for 97 yards and a TD.

Rodney Moore led the ground attack with 14 carries for 52 yards with two TDs.

Chris Sheckler led the team with 13 tackles (6 solo), while Daniel Wysong added 10 tackles.

NWU finished with 358 total yards, led by quarterback Zac Rabe who was 14-21 for 105 yards passing, while rushing for 68 yards.

DWU will now have an off-week before hosting third-ranked University of Sioux Falls on Nov. 4 in the final home game of the season.
