DWU Volleyball Falls 3-1 to Briar Cliff

Sioux City, Iowa — The Dakota Wesleyan University volleyball team traveled to Sioux City, Iowa and lost 3-1 to Briar Cliff University on Saturday night (Oct. 28) in Great Plains Athletic Conference volleyball action.

The Tigers won game one, 30-28, before the Chargers took the final three games, 31-29, 30-15, 34-32.

With the loss the Tigers fall to 9-22 overall and 4-11 in the GPAC. Dakota Wesleyan is now in a must win situation if they wish to qualify for the GPAC Postseason Tournament. If DWU defeats the University of Sioux Falls on Tuesday at home, and Mount Marty College loses to Northwestern College, then DWU will tie Mount Marty in the standings. DWU would win the tiebreaker because they won the head to head matchup.

Against Briar Cliff, the Tigers nearly pulled the upset after taking the first game and forcing two other games to go past 30. Blythe Novotny led DWU with 15 kills, while Kalie Whealy had 13 kills.

Beth Kopfmann handed out 43 assists and Cheri Klabenes led the team with 32 digs.

For BCU, Renee Beiermann led the way with 20 kills. Kayla Bessmer had a match-high 59 assists for the Chargers who improve to 19-10 overall and 10-5 in the GPAC.

The Tigers now prepare for their crucial final home match against rival USF. The match between the Tigers and the Cougars is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Christen Wellness Center.
