Oct. 30, 2006 Tigers Knock Off Mayville In Season Opener Mayville, N.D.— The Dakota Wesleyan men’s basketball team opened its 2006-07 season with a thrilling 93-88 victory over Mayville State University on Monday afternoon (Oct. 30) in Mayville, N.D. The Tigers led by three with 16.7 seconds remaining after Brock Seim converted on a pair of free throws. The Comets had a chance to tie the game, but the DWU defense made MSU force up an ill-advised 3-point attempt that missed, and the Tigers grabbed the rebound to seal the win. DWU led 43-41 at halftime, despite turning the ball over 16 times in the first half. The Tigers finished with 28 total turnovers in the game. The Tigers took advantage of 30 Comet fouls, as DWU converted 34-41 attempts (.829) from the free throw line. Brock Seim led the Tigers with 25 points with eight rebounds. Sophomore Preston Broughton recorded a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds in his first career start. Jesse Block and Marcus Vontz both came off the bench to score 12 points. For Mayville St., Monty Rogers scored 24 points, while Andy Parochka had 22 points including six 3-pointers. The Comets were the unanimous choice to win the Dakota Athletic Conference this season after going 26-8 in 2005-06 advancing to the NAIA II National Quarterfinals. MSU was 14-1 at home last season. Dakota Wesleyan will open up at the Corn Palace this weekend (Nov. 3-4) when they host Black Hills State University and South Dakota School of Mines & Technology. |
