DWU Men’s Soccer Advances to Region Final Four

Mitchell, S.D. —The Dakota Wesleyan men’s soccer team defeated Dordt College, 1-0, on Tuesday afternoon (Oct. 31) in the first round of the 2006 NAIA Region III Men’s Soccer Tournament at Cadwell Park in Mitchell. The Tigers now advance to the Region III Final Four where they will face the second-seeded Northwestern College Red Raiders. DWU and Northwestern will play Friday (Nov. 3) at 7 p.m. at Hastings, Neb.

DWU, the third seed, got a goal from Juan Baltazar at the 27:46 mark to go up 1-0 at halftime, and that is all they would need. Baltazar got the goal after Richard Simmonds sent a shot from deep that was deflected to Baltazar who got his 19th goal of this season.

Dordt finishes its season with a 10-7-1 overall record. The Defenders had 15 total shots with five shots on goal. Goalie Brandon Vander Wel had five sives.

Dakota Wesleyan now prepares for the Northwestern Red Raiders who they defeated in the first matchup of the season in dramatic fashion. The first match between DWU and Northwestern was a 2-1 double overtime victory for the Tigers as they scored a goal in the final seconds of double overtime. Northwestern has a 9-9 overall record.

Start time is set for 7 p.m. at Lloyd Wilson Field on the campus of Hastings College.
