Mar. 20, 2007 Tigers Battle Cold & Wind to Get 7-3 Win Mitchell, S.D. — Dakota Wesleyan starting pitcher Phil Johnson threw seven strong innings allowing just three hits and no unearned runs as the Tigers picked up a 7-3 victory over Ashford University in a 9-inning NAIA baseball game on a cold blustery day at Drake Field on Tuesday (Mar. 20) in Mitchell, S.D. Dakota Wesleyan took all four games from Ashford over the weekend. The Tigers now improve to 10-8 overall after going 5-1 the past four days. DWU scored one run in each of the first three innings and that was all that Johnson would need as he shut down the Saints bats. The only run allowed by Johnson was in the top of the sixth inning as Ashford manufactured a run after an infield error by the Tigers. Johnson, a native of Mitchell, also struck out four batters and allowed just one walk in his first start at DWU. At the plate, Nevin Sorenson went 2-3 with two RBI to lead the Tigers. Josh Oltmans and Scott Moerike each had a double for DWU as the Tigers combined for eight total hits. Jake Steve took the loss on the mound for Ashford, going five innings allowing five earned runs on six hits with four walks. Dakota Wesleyan is set to open Great Plains Athletic Conference play
this weekend. The Tigers will play at Northwestern College on Friday
(Mar. 23) then travel down to Lincoln, Neb., to take on Nebraska Wesleyan
University on Saturday afternoon. |
