Tigers Roll Past Briar Cliff 37-14

Mitchell, S.D. — Jon Doom threw a touchdown pass and ran for another as Dakota Wesleyan had 442 yards of total offense in a 37-14 victory over Briar Cliff University in GPAC football action on Saturday (Nov. 3) at Joe Quintal Field in Mitchell, S.D.

The Tigers won for the second straight week and improved their overall record to 3-6. Briar Cliff falls to 0-10 overall and 0-9 in the GPAC.

The DWU defense limited the Chargers to 226 yards of total offense and just 69 rushing yards. The Tigers also had three interceptions and recovered three Briar Cliff fumbles.

DWU led 13-7 at halftime then scored three consecutive touchdowns to go up 30-7 before BCU got a TD late in the fourth quarter.

Keith Jones, who led DWU with 83 yards on 24 carries, scored the first TD of the game with 11:30 to play in the first quarter. Briar Cliff tied the game as David Smith scored on a one yard run with 10:16 to play in the second quarter.

Sergio Leon connected on back-to-back 26 yard field goals to make the game 13-7 at half. Leon then opened the second half with a 40-yard field goal to put DWU up 16-7.

Doom scored the first TD of the second half when he scrambled out of the backfield to rumble 19 yards to paydirt. To start the fourth quarter, Doom found Jesse Ayers for a 12-yard TD reception at the 4:56 mark in the fourth quarter.

JD Lindsay found Andrew Prohaska for a seven yard TD pass to give the Chargers their only score of the second half.

DWU capped the scoring when Raymond “Boogie” Blossom bounced to the outside and ran 32 yards for a touchdown on his only carry of the game.

Doom finished the game 15-29 for 205 yards with a TD and an interception. DWU had its second highest rushing total of the season with 222 yards. Juan Magallon led the Tiger receivers with five receptions for 68 yards, while Ayers had four catches for 60 yards with a TD.

Daniel Wysong and Ryan Deibert led the DWU defense with nine total tackles apiece.

BCU starting quarterback Lane Claussen was 7-17 for 81 yards, and his replacement JD Lindsay was 7-20 for 76 yards with three interceptions and a TD.

Dakota Wesleyan will close out its 2007 season next Saturday (Nov. 10) when they travel to Blair, Neb., to take on Dana College. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
