DWU Women Open Season 0-2

Spearfish, S.D. — The Dakota Wesleyan women’s basketball team opened the 2007-08 season by dropping a pair of games out west to Dakota Athletic Conference opponents. The Tigers almost upset #16 South Dakota Tech, falling 62-59 on Saturday night in Rapid City, S.D., then DWU traveled to Spearfish, S.D., and were defeated 83-59 by Black Hills State on Sunday afternoon.

DWU battled very tough and played very good defense in its upset attempt on Saturday evening. The Tigers had opportunities to tie the game on the final possession but 3-point attempts would not go in so the Hardrockers held on for the victory.

Sophomore transfer Allison Johnson made an impressive debut for DWU as she connected on four 3-pointers to lead the Tigers with 21 points. The only other Tiger to reach double figures for DWU was junior guard Sarah Mortenson with 10 points.

Senior center Adria Pazour scored eight points and led DWU with seven rebounds. The Tigers shot 46.8 percent from the field but were hampered by 27 turnovers.

On Sunday afternoon, turnovers were the main story for DWU. The Tigers had 35 turnovers and struggled on the offensive end. Dakota Wesleyan led early in the first half, until just past the eight minute mark when BHSU took over.

Black Hills State attempted 23 more field goals than DWU and out rebounded the Tigers 39-31.

DWU had two players reach double figures in scoring. Allison Johnson had 11 points, while junior Whitney Gard came off the bench to hit three 3-pointers and finish with 11 points. Heidi Lusk led the Tigers with six rebounds.

Dakota Wesleyan will make its home debut on Friday (Nov. 9) when they host Valley City State University at the Corn Palace.
