USF Edges DWU 3-2 in Volleyball Season Finale

Mitchell, S.D. — Sioux Falls won the deciding game five 15-13 as the Cougars edged Dakota Wesleyan, 3-2, in the 2007 volleyball season finale on Wednesday night (Oct. 31) in front of Halloween dressed festive crowd at Fosness Arena on the DWU campus in Mitchell, S.D.

The Tigers end the 2007 season with a 6-23 overall and 2-14 GPAC record.

Dakota Wesleyan came out of the gates firing and took an early lead in game one, then held off a furious USF rally to earn a 30-27 win in game one.

The Cougars took game two 30-21 to tie the match at 1-1. Game three was also controlled by DWU as the Tigers earned the 30-23 win. USF got ahead early in game four and cruised to a 30-23 win.

USF never trailed in game five after getting ahead 6-4. The Tigers would pull within one point at 5-6 but wouldn’t get the lead back to one point until match point at 14-13. A block error was called on the final volley to give USF the match victory.

Four players reached double figures in kills for DWU led by Julie Givan with 14 kills. Kalie Whealy added 13 kills and six blocks in her final match, while Jen Miner had 11 and Maria Wieneke had 10 kills.

Senior Beth Kopfmann had 52 assists and 16 digs in her final match in a Tiger uniform. Dena Kopfmann led the way with 35 digs.

Beth Mathes led USF with a match-high 23 kills and had 19 digs. Monica Bloyer led USF with 12 kills and Jamie Gerdes had 11. Erica Leaver handed out 48 assists.

The Tigers honored the four seniors, Kylie Mundt, Holly Schramm, Kalie Whealy and Beth Kopfmann before the match.
