Sept. 25, 2007 Men’s Golfers Set Records at Hastings Invite
Hastings, Neb. — The Dakota Wesleyan University men’s golf team set a new school record for a 36-hole tournament as the Tigers shot a team score of 592 at the Hastings College Invitational to break the old school record by 10 strokes. The previous record of 602 was set in 2006 at the Nebraska Wesleyan Invite. DWU junior Brett Abbotts also set a new school record by shooting a 36-hole score of 142 to become the first DWU golfer to finish under par after a 36-hole tournament. Abbotts was the individual medalist at the tournament shooting rounds of 70 and 72 to finish with a 2-under 142. Despite the Tigers record setting performance, DWU finished in second place in the team race. Midland Lutheran College had a two-day total of 591 to defeat the Tigers by one stroke. DWU led by one stroke after Monday’s action, but the Warriors shot a 298 on Tuesday compared to the Tigers score of 300. A total of 12 teams competed in the two-day Hastings College Invitational in Hastings, Neb., on Monday and Tuesday (Sept. 24-25). Day one was played at Lochland County Club with day two action taking place at Southern Hills Golf Course. DWU golfer Nick Gates joined Abbotts in the top 10 individually. Gates had a two-day score of 150 (76-74) to tie for seventh place. Tom Hoek and Tyler Evenson had identical scores of 152 (75-77) while Chris Pritchard rounded out the DWU lineup with a total of 153 (72-81).
