DWU Volleyball Wins Thriller Over Dakota State

Mitchell, S.D. — The Dakota Wesleyan volleyball team got their first home win of the season as the Tigers thrilled the homecoming festive capacity crowd with an exciting 3-2 victory over Dakota State on Tuesday night (Sept. 25) at Fosness Arena in the Christen Family Recreation/Wellness Center.

The Tigers (5-11) won the first two games, 30-23 and 31-29 before Dakota State rallied to take the next two games, 30-20 and 30-25. Game five was back and forth before DWU scored the final two points as Jen Miner ended the game with a kill to give the Tigers a 15-11 win.

The five-game victory was the first home win of the 2007 season for DWU, and it was the first match that has gone all five games this season.

With the score 13-10 in game five, a Tiger hitting error made it 13-11. However, DWU senior Kalie Whealy slammed a kill to give the Tigers a 14-11 lead to setup the Miner kill for the match winner on the next service.

Whealy led DWU with 18 kills and an outstanding .405 hitting percentage. The Madison, S.D., native also led the Tigers with seven total blocks (three solo). Two other Tigers reached double figures in kills. Miner finished with 15 kills and Maria Wieneke recorded a double-double with 12 kills and 11 digs.

Two other DWU players recorded double digit digs. Dena Kopfmann led the way with 29, while Holly Schramm had 16.

Beth Kopfmann handed out 46 assists for the Tigers.

The one downfall for DWU was on the serve as the Tigers had 15 service errors, and 15 reception errors.

Dakota State (1-13) was led by Margie Anthony with 16 kills. Amy Pheneger and Jenna Kostelecky each had 13 kills. Krista Klemm handed out 50 assists.

Dakota Wesleyan returns to GPAC action this weekend when travel to Nebraska for a pair of matches. The Tigers play at Midland Lutheran College on Friday in Fremont, Neb., then drive over to Blair, Neb., to face Dana College on Saturday afternoon.
