April 7, 2008 Tiger track team meets stiff
competition in Sioux Falls SIOUX FALLS — The Dakota Wesleyan track team competed at the Vance Bauer Invite Saturday at Howard Wood Stadium in Sioux Falls, where the Tigers had seven different top-10 finishes despite very strong competition. The meet included the likes of North Dakota, South Dakota, Augustana and Minnesota State University-Mankato. “It was definitely a nice meet to be able to go to,” head coach Pat Belling said. “With four Division II teams, two of them soon to be Division I, it was good competition and a good experience. I am pretty happy with how the meet went. We had personal records and some good times. ... It was very windy at Howard Wood Stadium, so considering the elements, I thought they ran and jumped well.” Frank Thompson, who qualified for the high jump at the national indoor meet last month, was the Tigers’ top finisher. He cleared 6-4 in the high jump to take second place. Alex Liberty also found success in the high jump, finished seventh with a jump of 6-2. “Frank Thompsen only jumped 6-4, but he’s really just kind of starting his season,” Belling said. “We were pretty impressed. He had some good attempts at 6-4. Layne Scheveck looked strong in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing third in 59.01 seconds. Isaac VanDyke finished fourth in the steeplechase in 10:04.30. Thomas Madut finished seventh in the men’s 5,000-meter run in a time of 16:25.72. Brittany Ulmer, a national indoor qualifier in the long jump, finished ninth on Saturday with a jump of 4.79 meters. Stephanie Leist was 10th in the women’s 100-meter dash. “Ulmer had been struggling with that hamstring pull,” Belling said, referring to the injury that plagued her at the national indoor meet. “She improved (Saturday) as well. That’s some positive steps in the right direction in terms of getting her back on track.” The Tigers will be back in action Saturday when they compete at the Northwestern Red Raider Open in Orange City, Iowa.
