Briar Cliff Sweeps Tigers in GPAC Softball Doubleheader

SIOUX CITY, IOWA — The Dakota Wesleyan University softball team was swept by Briar Cliff University 4-0 and 8-6 in a GPAC doubleheader on Wednesday (April 9).

In game one, the Tigers were plagued with five errors and didn’t score any runs off five hits. Amy Torgerson started and took the loss on the mound, giving up four runs off seven hits. Ekekela Watson, Valerie Spencer, Annie Martinez, Sarah Wells and Torgerson each had a hit for DWU.

Dakota Wesleyan scored three quick runs in the first inning of the second game with the help of a double by Martinez, a double by Wells and a single by Makinna Meeks. Briar Cliff followed by scoring one run in the bottom of the first, and then both teams put together three-run third innings. The difference of the game came in the bottom of the fifth inning when Briar Cliff scored four runs.

Spencer took the mound for the Tigers in the second game and gave up eight runs off nine hits. She also gave up nine walks, including three in the Chargers’ four-run fifth inning.

Meeks led the Tiger bats going 2-2 with three RBIs. Meghan Hauck went 2-4 with one RBI, and Wells finished 1-4 with two RBIs.

The Tigers fall to 6-13 overall and 1-7 in the GPAC, and Briar Cliff improves to 9-5 in the conference and 13-13 overall.

The Tigers will host Dana College on Saturday, April 12. The opening pitch against Dana is scheduled for 1 p.m.
