April 14, 2008 Tigers Back to .500 with Sweep over Concordia University SEWARD, NEB. — The Dakota Wesleyan University baseball team evened its overall record to 14-14 and GPAC record to 6-6 with an 11-1 and 8-7 GPAC doubleheader sweep over Concordia University on Sunday (April 13). These games were originally scheduled as home games for the Tigers; however, with the recent snowfall, the games were first rescheduled in Sioux City, Iowa, and then finally moved to Seward, Neb. The Tigers scored eight runs off six hits in the first inning to take a quick lead. Sean Heary had two singles; Ryan Santiago and Terry Lundeen each had a single; and Jeff Bollard and Jake Roy each had a double for the Tiger offense in the first inning. Chris Dennis took the mound for the Tigers, working all five innings and improved his overall win-loss record to 2-1. Dennis struck out six and gave up just one run off four hits. Heary and Santiago each finished the game 2-3 with three RBIs. Bollard went 2-3 with two RBIs, and Roy was 2-3 with one RBI. In the second game, the Tigers got off to another quick start with a five-run first inning off six hits, but Concordia put together a five-run second inning to tie the game. DWU used four pitchers to get a one-run win in the bottom of the eighth inning. Robert Stevens got the start pitching two full innings and faced one batter in the third inning. Stevens gave up six runs off five hits. Patrick Dennis came in during the third inning and held Concordia to no hits and no runs. Thomas Pickett was brought in to pitch during the fifth inning and gave up one run off three hits. Phil Johnson closed the game and got the win for the Tigers. He pitched the seventh and eighth innings, and gave up just one hit and struck out one. Sean Worley led the Tiger offense going 2-4 with two RBIs. Josh Pritt finished 2-3, and Roy, Santiago, Kyle Isaacson, and Zach Huston each had an RBI for Wesleyan. The Tigers move into a three-way tie for fifth place in the GPAC standings with Morningside College and Nebraska Wesleyan University. Dakota Wesleyan is on the road to play a GPAC doubleheader against Hastings College on Monday, April 14. The Tigers will then host South Dakota State University in a nonconference game on Tuesday, April 15. The first pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Cadwell Park Stadium. |
