DWU Women’s Soccer Adds More Signees

MITCHELL, S.D. — Dakota Wesleyan University head women’s soccer coach Dale Roden has announced the signing of five players to join the DWU women’s soccer program. Cheyenne Barrett from Havre High School (Havre, Mont.), Karen del Rosario Orta from Elsik High School (Houston), Tricia Parrish from Frederick High School (Haxton, Colo.), Noel Russell from James Madison High School (San Antonio), and Brechelle Winsell from Sturgis Brown High School (Sturgis, S.D.) all have committed to play for the Tigers during the 2008 soccer season.

“These recruits have the athletic ability to be impact players as well as the academic credentials that stress the importance of the term student-athlete,” Roden said. “With each addition, this recruiting class makes us all very eager to get started this fall. Preseason will provide us with the opportunity to use every athlete’s talent within the team atmosphere.”

Barrett (5-6 defender) was given the President’s Education Award for Outstanding Academic Excellence in 2007. She was a member of the local soccer organization, since they do not have sanctioned soccer at her high school. She is the sister of men’s soccer team member, Shiloh Barrett.

“Cheyenne brings many of the tools that we desire to have in our defensive scheme, including athleticism, maturity, patience and a great work ethic,” Roden said.

Orta (5-10 center/midfielder) was a 2007 All-District 5A Honorable Mention selection. She was the varsity captain of her team and a two-year starter at Elsik High School. Karen is the former teammate of current DWU women’s soccer player, Ruth Pereira.

“Karen brings a great presence to our midfield. Her ability to dominate in the air is something that we will look to use on both ends,” Roden said. “With an aggressive style of offensive execution, we are confident that she will be a consistent threat to the other teams’ defensive third.”

Parrish (5-6 defender) was a two-year letterwinner in soccer at Frederick High School. She made the high school honor roll her freshman and sophomore years.

“We feel that Tricia will find her way into our starting lineup this fall,” Roden said. “She possesses the competitive edge that is especially motivating not only in her play but for those who play around her.”

Russell (5-2 forward) was an All-District Second-Team selection in 2006-07. She was named to the “Who’s Who Among American High School Students” in 2005-06 and 2006-07. She is the teammate of Teagan Aguinaga who committed earlier this year to play soccer at DWU.

“Noel brings with her an unmatched level of experience in the offensive third of the field,” Roden said. “We anticipate that she will provide our program with the attacking mentality that every team works to nurture and cultivate.”

Winsell (5-5 defender/midfielder) was an All-State Second-Team defender as a senior. She was a four-time varsity letterwinner in soccer and helped her team to a championship season in 2006.

“We will look to Brechelle to step into our defensive third and contribute right away. We have no reservations in stating that she will stake claim in our defensive stand as soon as this fall,” Roden said. “Brechelle is extremely consistent and hardworking, and we are overjoyed to include her in this recruiting class.”

With these commitments, the women’s soccer program has 11 signees for the 2008 recruiting class.
