Feb. 29, 2008 No. 4 Broncos End Tigers’ Season HASTINGS, NEB. — The No. 4 Hastings College women’s basketball team scored 28 points off Tiger turnovers in a 77-51 victory over the Dakota Wesleyan University women in a Great Plains Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Postseason Tournament quarterfinal game on Thursday (Feb. 28). The loss ends the season for the DWU women’s basketball team. The Tigers finished with a 17-15 overall record, the first winning season since 2003-04. Hastings improves its overall record to 27-4 and moves on to the semifinals of the GPAC Postseason Tournament. The Tigers kept the game close early on and tied the game at 10-10 after a layup by Angela Noteboom with 13:34 to play in the first half. Hastings then went on a 10-2 run and held a 20-12 advantage at the 10-minute mark. DWU cut the lead to five points with 1:45 to play after two free throws by Ashley Johnson, but Hastings made back-to-back 3-point shots to take an 11-point lead at the half. The Broncos started the second half with a 14-6 run and took a 21-point lead with 12:28 to play in the game. The Tigers trimmed the lead to 16 points after a 3-point shot by Allison Johnson at the 3:46 mark, but Hastings ended the game on a 10-0 run to seal the victory. Hastings got second-chance shots off 14 offensive rebounds and held a 21-8 advantage on second-chance points. The Tigers did not have any players in double figures. Allison Johnson and Adria Pazour each finished with nine points, and Noteboom came off the bench to add eight points. DWU had 26 turnovers and finished the game shooting almost 41 percent from the field. Heather McKeon came off the bench to lead the Broncos with 21 points. Breanna Lien finished with 12 points, and Haruka Yamashita added 11 points. Hastings will advance to the semifinal game against Northwestern College on Saturday, March 1 in Orange City, Iowa. |
