DWU Athletic Awards Handed Out

MITCHELL, S.D. — Many of the Dakota Wesleyan University student-athletes were honored on April 27 at the 2008 Athletic Honors banquet held at the Sherman Center on campus.

The 2007-08 All-GPAC performers, NAIA Scholar Athletes, DWU Scholar Athletes, and NAIA All-Americans and Academic All-Americans were all honored. All DWU senior student athletes and senior athletic training majors were also acknowledged.

Senior Holly Schramm was given the Matthew D. Smith Award. The Matthew D. Smith award is presented in recognition of Dr. Matthew D. Smith’s support of excellence in academics and athletics. It is presented to a scholar-athlete based on academic achievement, athletic participate, and leadership on and off the athletic field. Schramm, a Winner, S.D. native, was a nursing major and a four-year member of the Tiger volleyball team.

The Cheever Award was given to Mike Molitor. The Cheever Award honors Coach Gene Cheever and his wife, Joan, for their devotion and service to Dakota Wesleyan from 1952-54. It is given by Coach Cheever’s former players from the 1952-53 football teams and is awarded to the top scholar football player in his senior year, selected by the DWU coaching staff. This award is based on football ability, academic ability, leadership, character, and involvement in campus life. Molitor, a Smithwick, S.D. native, was a four-year member of the DWU football team.

Tim Smith, General Manager of KMIT, presented the KMIT Student-Athlete of the Year Award to senior Kalie Whealy. Whealy, a Madison, S.D. native, was a four-year member of the Tiger volleyball team and a nursing major. She was a three-time All-GPAC Second Team.
