May 5, 2008 Nine Tigers Earn All-GPAC in Baseball
SIOUX CITY, IOWA — Nine members of the Dakota Wesleyan University baseball team were named to the 2008 Great Plains Athletic Conference Baseball All-Conference team that was announced Monday (May 5). DWU senior pitcher Chris Baker and senior outfielder Jake Roy were both selected to the All-GPAC First Team. Junior first baseman Sean Heary and junior second baseman Sean Worley were named All-GPAC Second Team, while Kyle Isaacson, Jeff Bollard, Chris Dennis, Phil Johnson, and Thomas Pickett received All-GPAC Honorable Mention honors. Baker (RHP, Sr.) was 9-3 on the mound for the Tigers. He had a team-leading 1.80 ERA and had 72 strikeouts in 65 innings of work. Baker, a Milwaukie, Ore. native, was named the GPAC Pitcher-of-the-Week and NAIA Region III Pitcher-of-the-Week for the week of April 14-20. Roy (OF, Sr.) led the Tigers’ offense batting .411 with four homeruns and 41 RBIs. The Corvallis, Ore.-native led DWU in batting average, slugging percentage (.596), doubles (10), on-base percentage (.514), hits (58), runs scored (45) and RBIs. He was 19-24 on stolen bases and had 66 putouts in the field. Heary (1B, Jr.) was second on the team with 52 hits. He batted .347 in 150 at bats and had five homeruns. The Yakima, Wash.-native had a team-high 288 putouts in the field. Worley (2B, Jr.) was second on the team with a .362 batting average. He had 28 hits and 18 RBIs. The Yakima, Wash.-native had seven doubles and was third on the team with eight stolen bases. Isaacson (DH, Jr.) batted .312 and had eight doubles, three triples, and seven homeruns. He was second on the team with 36 RBIs and a .560 slugging percentage. Isaacson, a Seattle, Wash. native, had 44 hits on the season. Bollard (C, Sr.) batted .267 on the season with 24 hits and 15 RBIs. Behind the plate, the Broomfield, Colo.-native threw out 12-17 runners attempting to steal a base. Dennis (LHP, Sr.) had a 3-3 win/loss record on the mounds for the Tigers. He had a 4.89 ERA and had 34 strikeouts. The Centennial, Colo.-native worked 49.2 innings for DWU. Johnson (RHP, So.) was second on the team with a 2.52 ERA. He finished the year with a 4-1 record in 17 appearances. Johnson, a Mitchell, S.D. native, allowed 10 earned runs while striking out 27 batters. Pickett (RHP, Fr.) led the Tigers in appearances on the mound with 19. He had two saves and finished nine games. The Lead, S.D.-native had a 4.46 ERA and 28 strikeouts. Bret Hoch of Morningside College was named the GPAC Player-of-the-Year, and Zane Cascini of Nebraska Wesleyan University was the GPAC Pitcher-of-the-Year. Boyd Pitkin of Briar Cliff University was named the Coach-of-the-Year. Dakota Wesleyan finished the 2008 season with a 25-21 overall record.
