Oct. 12, 2008 Women’s soccer settles for pair of scoreless ties MITCHELL, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University women’s soccer team was excellent on the defensive end this week. Over two games and 220 minutes of action, the Tigers didn’t allow a single goal to either the University of Sioux Falls or Nebraska Wesleyan University. However, DWU wasn’t able to score a goal in both games either, and the Tigers were forced to settle for a pair of 0-0, double-overtime ties against Sioux Falls on Tuesday and NWU on Saturday.
Tuesday’s game was originally scheduled to be held in Mitchell, but persistent rain Monday soaked the fields at Cadwell Park, and the game was moved to Sioux Falls’ Sanford Health Sports Complex. The Tigers controlled the play for much of the game, and had several chances to get on the board. DWU outshot USF 19-18, and the Tigers had 12 shots on goal, compared to just five for the Cougars. DWU goalkeeper Danielle Richardson earned the shutout – her second of the season and her second in a row – by making five saves in 110 minutes. USF goalie Alixandrea Hood also earned a shutout by saving 10 shots, and the Cougar team was also credited for two saves. Ellie Peterson led DWU with six shots (four on goal) and USF was led by Tasia Murray with seven shots (three on goal). The tie left the Tigers 5-5-1 overall and 2-2-1 in the GPAC, and USF went to 2-8-2 overall and 1-3-2 in the league. Dakota Wesleyan played to another scoreless tie Saturday against NWU in Lincoln, Neb. Richardson got her third consecutive shutout by making seven saves over another 110 minutes of action. The sophomore from Wichita, Kan., hasn’t allowed a goal since Sept. 27 in a 2-1 win over Hastings College. Richardson’s counterpart, Sara Perdew, made six saves for the Prairie Wolves to keep the Tigers off the scoreboard. The stats were nearly as identical as the final score. DWU took 17 shots overall, with six shots on goal, and NWU took 16 shots with seven shots on goal. DWU held a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks and committed one more foul (13-12). Peterson again led the Tigers with five shots (three on goal) and the Prairie Wolves were led by Libby Slater, who took a game-high six shots (four on goal). The DWU women are back in action Wednesday with a GPAC game in Sioux City, Iowa, against Morningside College. The game begins at 6 p.m. with the men’s game to follow at 8 p.m. |
