Oct. 13, 2008 Tiger men end successful fall with second-place finish HASTINGS, Neb. – The Dakota Wesleyan University men’s golf team wrapped up its successful fall season with a second-place finish at the Hastings College Fall Invite Thursday and Friday in Hastings, Neb. DWU finished with a two-day total of 591 (292-299), which was just one shot away from tying the school record for the lowest team score over 36 holes. The Tigers shot a 590 to set a new school record just one week earlier at their home invite, so the team ended the fall season with two of the best performances in school history.
Bethany College (Kan.), won the tournament with a score of 586 (295-291). The Tigers finished five shots back in second, and Wayne State College (Neb.) took third with a 595 (291-304). In all, there were 20 teams that competed at the two-day invite. Three DWU golfers finished in the individual top ten. Sophomore Tyler Evenson took third with a 36-hole total of 144 (71-73). Senior Brett Abbotts was two shots back with a 146 (71-75), which was good for sixth place, and sophomore Chris Pritchard finished seventh with a total of 148 (73-75). Tiger junior Nick Gates tied for 18th with a 153 (77-76), and freshman Andrew Farrand rounded out the line up with a 161 (79-82), which tied him for 46th place individually. In all, DWU recorded just one score in the 80s over the two days. DWU also had ‘B’ and ‘C’ teams competing at the invite. The Tiger ‘B’ squad tied for eighth place with a team total of 637 (320-317). Adam Golesh led the ‘B’ team with a 150 (72-78), which was good for a 12th-place tie in the individual standings. Billy Jarrett (158), Adam Shiffermiller (163), Marty Orme (168) and Adam Maloney (173) rounded out the team’s lineup. The DWU ‘C’ team finished 20th with a score of 726 (358-368). Lex Moore led the ‘C’ squad with a 167 (82-85), and Kellen Weidner (178), Derek DeVries (187) and Eric Nelson (194) rounded out the four-man team. The Tigers will now take the winter off before returning to finish the 2008-09 golf season in the spring. In eight tournaments this fall, DWU won four titles and added a second-place finish, two thirds and a sixth-place finish. The Tigers also have a 19-shot lead after the two fall Great Plains Athletic Conference Qualifier meets, so DWU has put itself in great position to win its second-straight conference title in the spring. |
