MITCHELL, S.D. – For many years, the city of Mitchell – and Dakota Wesleyan – didn’t have a softball field that was up to par with other collegiate softball fields around the country. Now, thanks to donation from Dr. Robert McWhirter and the City of Mitchell, the Tiger softball program, as well as other fastpitch softball programs around the city, have a field to call home. Dakota Wesleyan will host a dedication ceremony for Dr. McWhirter Field Sunday, Sept. 19, at the field, which is Field C on the northwest corner of the Cadwell Park complex. The field has been completely renovated and will be used this fall by the Mitchell High School and Mitchell Middle School softball programs. It will also be used by the Tigers for several fall games and will be the home field for DWU for the 2011 softball season. The field features a brand new press box, dugouts, fences, scoreboard, spectator seating and lighting. After McWhirter contributed the initial money to get the project started, the City of Mitchell agreed to match his donation to help complete the field. The dedication ceremony will be at 11:30 a.m. Sept. 19 at the field. The Mitchell Chamber of Commerce will do a ribbon cutting ceremony and McWhirter and city officials will be recognized for their donations. There will be free hot dogs and pop for those in attendance. Three area softball teams will be introduced prior to their games that day, and the Tigers will take on in-state rival Dakota State University at noon in a doubleheader. All activities the day of the dedication, and the public is welcome and invited to attend. |
