Head Softball Coach
Western Michigan University ‘03

Marie McCarthy-Foster enters her third season as the head softball coach at Dakota Wesleyan University with the foundation in place for a strong program. DWU didn’t lose any players to graduation from its 2009 team, and with another strong recruiting class, the Tigers appear poised to take a big step forward in 2010 under McCarthy-Foster’s direction.

In 2009, McCarthy-Foster’s squad finished 10-24 overall and 6-18 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference. Season highlights included Lauren Lynds’ no-hitter against Cedarville University, the team’s four wins on its Spring Break trip to Cocoa Beach, Fla., a nine-inning walk-off win over Midland Lutheran College, and thrilling one-run GPAC wins over Morningside College, the University of Sioux Falls and Briar Cliff University.

McCarthy-Foster guided five Tiger players to All-GPAC honors in 2009, with one second-team pick and four honorable mention selections. Her team set a new school record with a sparkling .942 fielding percentage, and Brandi Nekrassoff set a school record by drawing 17 walks.

Overall, McCarthy-Foster has a 23-46 record in two seasons at Dakota Wesleyan. She is currently tied for the third-most wins in school history and trails all-time leader Beth Conroy (1997-99) by just 15 victories. In her two seasons leading the Tigers, McCarthy-Foster has coached nine All-GPAC selections and one NAIA Scholar-Athlete. Under her direction, DWU has broken or tied eight school records, including season batting average (.279), stolen base percentage (.714), fielding percentage (.942), doubles (48), and the school single-game marks for hits (19) and runs (18).

Before becoming the 13th softball coach in DWU history, McCarthy served as the recruiting coordinator at Iowa Central Community College and helped the team to a 52-13 overall record and a league championship in 2007. The 2007 team finished fifth in the NJCAA National Softball Poll.

The Lansing, Mich., native was a three-year letterwinner in softball at NCAA Division I Western Michigan University. She helped lead the team to the 2003 Mid-American Conference Tournament Championship and was named to the All-Tournament Team.

McCarthy and her husband, Jason Foster, were married in the summer of 2008. They live in Mitchell.

Emily WeborgEmily Weborg
Assistant Softball Coach
Hastings College ’07
emweborg@dwu.edu

Emily Weborg is entering her second season as a graduate assistant coach for the Dakota Wesleyan University softball team. Weborg’s main coaching responsibilities with the Tigers include strength and conditioning, hitting and catching.

She joined Marie McCarthy-Foster’s staff for the 2009 season, and the Tigers finished the season 10-24 overall. Weborg has coached five All-GPAC selections at DWU.

Before coming to Dakota Wesleyan, Weborg was the junior varsity coach and an assistant varsity coach at Arvada West High School in Denver. She was also an assistant coach for the 18-and-under Colorado Stampede team, and she was a hitting and catching instructor at the Colorado Softball and Baseball Academy. Weborg also coached youth softball for three years in her hometown of Pender, Neb.

Weborg was already very familiar with the Great Plains Athletic Conference thanks to her collegiate playing career at Hastings College in Nebraska. A four-year starter at catcher, she was a two-time NAIA Scholar-Athlete and an All-GPAC Honorable Mention selection. While at Hastings, she was a team captain for the Broncos for three years.

Weborg received a bachelor’s degree from Hastings in 2007 with a major in exercise science and recreation management and a minor in coaching. She is currently pursuing her master’s degree in education policy and administration, and she anticipates completing it in May 2010.

She currently lives in Mitchell.

Darwin Tolzin
Assistant Softball Coach

Darwin Tolzin is entering his third year as an assistant softball coach at Dakota Wesleyan University. Tolzin came on board with Marie McCarthy-Foster before the 2008 season and currently serves as the Tigers’ pitching coach.

Tolzin brings almost three decades of playing experience to Dakota Wesleyan University, including several national ASA and ISC tournaments. Tolzin coached at the high school level in California from the early 1980s through 1998. In 1999, he was selected as the head softball coach at Moorpark Junior College, where he coached for one season.

Tolzin relocated to South Dakota in 2000 and served as a volunteer assistant and pitching coach at SDSU. In 2006, Tolzin was selected as the head coach of a club team in the Netherlands. He has also assisted with the Holland National Team
