Student-Athletes Taking Academic
Responsibilities Seriously
Mission Statement
The program is designed to provide academic support including areas of study
skill techniques, goal setting, and supervised study management. The S.T.A.R.S.
Program reflects a commitment to aiding student-athletes in identifying their
personal strengths and improving their weaknesses respective to their academic
endeavors. Academic success increases self-efficacy and student retention.
Objectives
- The student-athlete will learn how to use the study skills necessary
for academic success in the collegiate environment. This list of
skills includes, but is not limited to: note taking, homework habits,
personal learning styles, memory skills, test taking techniques,
research papers/sources and basic academic do's and don'ts.
- The student-athlete will develop goal-setting techniques, journals,
weekly planning for class objectives, and time management skills
(to include practice and class schedules), all of which are key elements
to the process of improving academic performance.
- The student-athlete will develop personal skills essential for
academic success through understanding the holistic philosophy of
mind, body, and spirit. (E.g., self-discipline, physical development,
and offering of Fellowship of Christian Athletes -by-products of
the Christian College environment).
Structure [

Level I: Student-athlete will complete a study plan every week,
reporting upcoming tests, homework assignments, and other required
coursework to the S.T.A.R.S. Center staff. This level is comprised
of new or returning S/A's with a cumulative G.P.A. of 2.41 and above.
Level II: Same as above, and in addition, level II S/A's must
complete 5 hours of tutoring, instruction, and S.T.A.R.S. Center studying
per week. This level is comprised of new or returning S/A's with a
2.01 - 2.4 G.P.A.
Level III: Same as above. S/A's must complete 8 hours of tutoring,
instructions, and S.T.A.R.S. Center studying per week. This level is
comprised of S/A's with a 2.0 or less G.P.A.
- Those students achieving 2.41 semester GPAs or higher will advance
to Level I for the spring semester.
- A S.T.A.R.S. Center participant who ascends to higher level for
a semester, but later falls into a lower level the following semester,
will repeat the S.T.A.R.S. Center program in the fall of the subsequent
semester.

Study Table Policy
Study Table Hours [

All study table hours will be monitored and completed in the Christen Wellness
Center unless advance permission is obtained for tutoring hours in the library
study table area from a member of the S.T.A.R.S. center staff.

- Level I: S-A's will complete a study plan every week, reporting

tutoring, instruction, mentoring, and STARS room studying per week.
New or returning s-a's with a 2.01 - 2.4 G.P.A.
- Level III: Same as above. S/A's must complete 8 hours of
tutoring, instructors, mentoring, or STARS Center study table hours
per week. All S/A's with a 2.0 or less G.P.A.
- Those students achieving 2.41 semester GPAs or higher will advance
to Level I for the spring semester.
- A S.T.A.R.S. Center participant who ascends to higher level for
a semester but later falls to a lower level the next semester will
repeat the S.T.A.R.S. Center program in the fall of the subsequent
semester.
- Those students achieving a 2.41 fall semester GPA but have yet
to achieve a 2.41 cumulative GPA for the year will repeat study table
the following fall semester.
- Students achieving a 2.41 or higher G.P.A.'s for two consecutive
semesters will graduate from the S.T.A.R.S. Center.

Study Hall Guidelines & Procedures [

- Tutoring hours are available through Student Support Services and
will be counted toward one's total study table hours.
- No food, magazines, or newspapers are allowed in the S.T.A.R.S.
Center (unless required for homework assignment).
- Library study table hours are as follows: Level II: 5 total hours.
Level III: 8 total hours. All library hours MUST BE certified by
a S.T.A.R.S. center staff member and signed-in with accu-trac.
- Textbooks and other academic materials are required prior to signing-in
to study table.
- All student-athletes must sign in and out of the STARS Center for
all hours of study table requirements.
- Quiet hours will be maintained during all study table hours or
students will be dismissed from study hall. Dismissal from study
table will result in suspension from practice/competition until study
table hours are accomplished.
- Students failing to meet weekly study table requirements will be
suspended from practice/competition until study table hours are successfully
completed.
- Head Coaches may "certify" (i.e. sign-off) study table
hours for students while on road trips.
- Weekly study table attendance will be calculated Friday of each
week. All "certified" hours must be e-mailed prior to Thursday
night at 9:00 p.m. for traveling student-athletes.
- Study table attendance records (i.e., weekly hours) will be e-mailed
weekly to each head coach.
- Mid-term and final grades will be e-mailed to each head coach.
- As received, professor feedback, and progress reports will be e-mailed
to each head coach.
