MITCHELL, S.D. – Dakota Wesleyan University women’s basketball player Allison Johnson recently put the finishing touches on an outstanding three-year career in a Tiger uniform, and the icing on the cake came Wednesday as she received All-Great Plains Athletic Conference Second team honors for the third-straight season. Johnson, a senior from nearby Mount Vernon, S.D., will graduate as one of the most prolific scorers in DWU women’s basketball history. Her 1,355 career points put her at No. 7 on the Tigers’ all-time scoring list, despite just playing three seasons at Dakota Wesleyan after transferring from Northern State University following her freshman year. Johnson’s average of 14.6 points per game is the fourth-best average in school history. In addition, she’ll graduate with 311 career rebounds, 249 assists and 142 steals in 93 career games. She is now a three-time All-GPAC Second Team selection, an NAIA Scholar Athlete and last season she was the GPAC’s representative for the prestigious NAIA Emil S. Liston Award. This season, Johnson earned her latest All-GPAC honor by leading DWU in scoring for the third-straight season. She scored 430 points in 31 games for a 13.9 average. Johnson also led the Tigers in assists (84), steals (44) and 3-pointers (49), and she also grabbed 96 rebounds. This season, Johnson shot 42.0 percent from the floor (146-for-348), 33.8 percent from behind the 3-point arc (49-for-145) and 77.4 percent from the line (89-for-115). Johnson is well-deserving of her All-GPAC honor if you just go by the numbers. She ranked in the top 12 in several statistical categories, including 10th in free throw percentage and minutes played, she was tied for 11th in scoring and she finished 12th in assists and three-pointers made. However, Johnson’s impact on the Tigers went beyond the stats, as one of the team’s captains and its go-to player in crucial situations. Briar Cliff University’s Liz Grider headlined the All-GPAC First Team and was voted the Hauff Mid-America Sports/GPAC Player-of-the-Year. Jeff Dittman, from league champion Hastings College, received Hauff Mid-America Sports/GPAC Coach-of-the-Year honors. Hastings’ Kim Faimon was named the GPAC Defensive Player-of-the-Year and Northwestern’s Kendra DeJong earned GPAC Freshman-of-the-Year honors. |
