Concordia pulls away from DWU women MITCHELL, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University women’s basketball team kept fighting back throughout Saturday’s Great Plains Athletic Conference game against Concordia University in Seward, Neb., but the Bulldogs eventually pulled away from the Tigers for a 78-56 win.
Concordia’s (17-9, 8-7) came despite a huge game from Dakota Wesleyan’s (8-19, 4-11) Johnson twins. Allison Johnson led all scorers with 20 points by shooting 6-for-13 from the floor and 8-for-12 from the free throw line, and her twin sister Ashley just missed a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds. The Bulldogs were good early, building an 11-point lead over the game’s first eight minutes, but the Tigers got two 3-pointers from Kenzie Dvoracek and a third from Maggie Malloy for a 9-0. Suddenly, DWU was down just two, 17-15. However, Concordia was able to methodically build its lead back up to double digits. Ashley Johnson connected on a three with 1:04 left in the first half to get DWU within seven, 43-36, at the half. The Tigers stayed within striking distance throughout most of the second half, but two quick Concordia runs finished off DWU’s upset hopes. The Bulldogs used a 6-0 run to turn a five-point lead into an 11-point advantage five minutes in, and another 6-0, keyed four points from Kristin Miller, pushed the lead all the way to 21 points at 64-43. Concordia cruised from there and DWU was stuck with defeat. Malloy joined the Johnson twins in double figures with 12 points and six rebounds. Dvoracek had a good game off the bench with eight points, but the rest of the team managed to contribute just six points combined as Concordia outscored the Tigers 29-10 in bench points. The Bulldogs had more balanced scoring. Katie Rich led the way with 16 points, TaLisa Krejci added 11 points and Kathryn Ommen scored 10 for Concordia. Miller added nine points and Stacy Scheer and Amber Quinn each scored eight points as 12 Bulldogs found the scoring column. Miller added a team-high seven boards and Treva Nutter dished out a game-high five assists. Dakota Wesleyan will try to bounce back from Saturday’s loss and score an impressive GPAC road win Wednesday when it travels to Yankton, S.D., to face in-state rival Mount Marty College. The women’s game will tip off at 6 p.m. with the men’s game to follow at 8 p.m. |
