Here’s what one of our
athletic training grads
says about her experiences at DWU:
Renae Hrbek-Bomar ‘02, M.A. ATC -
Assistant Athletic Trainer, Instructor, Indiana State University
“Dakota Wesleyan has influenced me holistically. With respect
to athletic training, I feel that I have come from a unique program.
I was able to compete as an athlete while attaining my degree. That
process alone taught me time management and communication skills. The
curriculum layout, being accepted into the program as a freshman and
receiving season-long clinical assignments, allowed me to learn information
at an earlier point in my education than at other institutions. It
gave me more time to apply my didactic learning in a clinical setting.
The clinical assignments gave me the opportunity to track injuries
and to learn the process and the feelings associated with taking an
athlete from the initial injury to determining when they are able to
return to play. These assignments also allowed me to learn how to make
those important connects with athletes and coaches, as well as, conflict
management skills.”
“The faculty and staff have given me the support and the network
to be successful. Under their tutelage I have learned how to assist
other student athletic trainers in their endeavors. Most importantly,
I was given enough independence to make decisions and mistakes, but
I always knew that if I needed help or made a mistake, they were there
to help me through it and correct it.”
“After experiencing other institutions and ways of thinking,
I believe DWU has given me the best foundation to work from. The class
sizes and faculty were tremendous.”
Some DWU grads
choose to continue their eduation:
Donella Headlee ‘03, ATC- Graduate
student and assistant athletic trainer, University of Virginia
Sarah Newton ‘03, ATC-Physician assistant studies,
University of South Dakota
“Being a physician assistant student, I realize on a daily basis
how well the DWU Athletic Training program has prepared me in knowledge,
confidence and professionalism to be successful in the medical field.
Getting my base knowledge by studying athletic training at DWU was
one of the best precursors to a professional degree that I could have
obtained. Dakota Wesleyan University’s athletic training program
provides not just the academic opportunities, but also a wide range
of clinical and hands-on experiences for a greater base of knowledge
and responsibility that prepares you to go anywhere in a medical field.”
