The Dakota Wesleyan Department of Music will kick off its choir season with its first concert performance this weekend.
This year’s Choral Hymn Festival will be at 7 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 6, at the Mitchell First United Methodist Church. Performances will be by the Dakota Wesleyan Choir, Men’s A Cappella Choir, Women’s Chamber Ensemble, Highlanders, Mitchell Area Children's Choir and Wesleyan Bells. The concert is free and open to the public.
The Choral Hymn Festival features sacred music including hymns, spirituals, anthems and renaissance pieces. Most groups will perform two numbers. Some well-known songs being performed include: “Rejoice the Lord is King,” “O God Beyond All Praising” and “Come, Christians, Join to Sing.” “The Irish Blessing” will also be performed, and Dr. Clint Desmond, DWU choir director, hopes the audience will learn to sing the song as the finale for all of their concerts. Audience participation is encouraged for all hymns.
Dakota Wesleyan’s choir is the largest it has been in more than 10 years with 43 members.
“The Hymn Festival has been well attended in the past few years,” Desmond said. “I hope that the community will enjoy the diversity of performing ensembles and the beautiful music they have prepared.”
