Art (ART)
Students will develop a variety of basic skills as well as preparation
for entry-level careers or graduate study. Students will master a variety
of mediums and the skills to specialize in one or two areas as independent
creative artists with the ability to produce works of art or meet the
requirements of commercial applications. The art department offers a variety
of courses that promote an appreciation of the role of art and aesthetics
in society. The art major requires a minimum of 39 credit hours. The art
minor requires a minimum of 21 credit hours.

Course Descriptions
101 Introduction to Basic Design 3 hours F
This foundation course combines studio work with classroom instruction.
Using the elements and principles of design, and working in various black-and-white
and color media along with elementary drawing skills, students in this
course develop an understanding of the various organizational possibilities
available in designing for the flat surface. Along with learning and applying
professional presentation skills and craftsmanship, the development of
ideas, problem-solving skills, creative thinking and understanding design
concepts are the focus of this course. This is a studio course requiring
extended hours.

120 Art Appreciation 3 hours S
This is an introductory lecture course focusing on the theoretical, cultural
and historic aspects of visual arts. Emphasis is on the development of
visual and aesthetic awareness.

202 Computer Graphics 3 hours F

203 Ceramics I 3 hours S10
This foundation course develops basic skills in hand building, glazing
and the potter’s wheel to create pottery and sculpture. This is
a studio course requiring extended hours.
204 Introduction to Sculpture 3 hours TBA
This course develops the fundamental skills of sculpture in a variety
of mediums with an emphasis on basic techniques and creative expression.
Media may include clay, wood, metal and/or plaster. This is a studio course
requiring extended hours.
205 Photography Foundations 3 hours F,S
This foundation course combines an investigation in photography history,
criticism and aesthetic sensitivity with studio application. This basic
digital photography focuses on skills useful for a graphic designer. Topics
include basic operation of a digital camera, composition, camera controls,
exposure, scanning, file formats and basic image enhancement for creative
use, photography history, influential photographers, and criticism. The
studio portion of this course requires extended hours.
206 Drawing I 3 hours S10
This foundation course develops basic skills of drawing in a variety of
mediums. The course explores perspective, still life, landscape and introduction
to figure drawing. This is a studio course that requires extended hours.
207 Printmaking I 3 hours TBA
This foundation studio course in the art of printmaking varies each semester
and may include intaglio, woodcut, linoleum block, monoprints, dry point,
serigraphy and collographs. This is a studio course requiring extended
hours.
Prerequisite: ART 206 or consent of instructor.

303 Ceramics II 3 hours F08
This course broadens the foundations of ART 203 and includes instruction
of kiln operation, stressing the conceptual and expressive potential of
clay. This is a studio course requiring extended hours.
Prerequisite: ART 203 or consent of instructor.
306 Drawing II 3 hours TBA
This studio course broadens the foundations of drawing as well as encourages
exploration of more sophisticated compositional issues. This is a studio
course requiring extended hours.
Prerequisite: ART 206 or consent of instructor.
307 Printmaking II 3 hours S10
This course expands areas of printmaking that vary each semester and may
include intaglio, monoprints, mixed media and lithography. This is a studio
course requiring extended hours.
Prerequisite: ART 207 or consent of instructor.
311 Digital Photography 3 hours TBA
This course expands basic techniques explored in ART 205 to the digital
photography environment. Students will explore digital photography as
applied art and as an art form. Focus will be placed on photographic composition,
processing and manipulation through Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Lightroom.
Students will investigate creative composition, natural and artificial
lighting, various digital processing, archiving and output methods. Students
will learn how to evaluate images for communicative effectiveness and
aesthetic appeal. Students are required to supply their own digital cameras.
This is a studio course requiring extended hours.

315 Painting I 3 hours F08
This foundation course develops basic skills in painting. Students will
work primarily in watercolor and acrylics. This is a studio course requiring
extended hours.
Prerequisite: ART 206.
330 Art History I 3 hours F08
This course surveys the enduring monuments, periods, styles and artists
in the history of art from prehistoric times through the Renaissance.
340 Art History II 3 hours TBA
This course surveys the important monuments, periods, styles and artists
in the history of art from the Renaissance to present day.
357 Art Education Methods 3 hours TBA
In this course students will examine art instruction methods for the elementary
and secondary levels (K-12), emphasizing art curriculum planning, motivational
strategies, art room management and methods of evaluation in art.
Prerequisites: EDU 201 and SPD 206.
Corequisites: EDU 300 and EDU 330.
415 Painting II 3 hours S09
This course expands upon the techniques introduced in ART 315 and emphasizes
the expressive and conceptual potential of painting. This is a studio
course requiring extended hours.
Prerequisite: ART 315 or consent of instructor.
450 Internship 1-3 hours F,S
Students may pursue internships in art with the consent of the chair of
the department.
Prerequisite: Consent of department chair.
456 Seminar in Art 3 hours TBA
This course provides students with the opportunity to further develop
their professional portfolio. Students will re-evaluate and refine existing
projects. Students will identify weaknesses in their portfolio and create
new projects in order to strengthen their portfolios. Projects are expected
to meet professional standards. Students will also develop a personal
identity package.
Prerequisite: Senior standing and an art major/minor with consent of department
chair.
460 Independent Study 1-3 hours F,S
Students may independently study areas of art not covered by regular offerings.
