Art (ART)
Students will develop a variety of basic skills as well as preparation for entry-level careers or graduate study. Students will master a variety of mediums and the skills to specialize in one or two areas as independent creative artists with the ability to produce works of art or meet the requirements of commercial applications. The art department offers a variety of courses that promote an appreciation of the role of art and aesthetics in society. The art major requires a minimum of 39 credit hours. The art minor requires a minimum of 21 credit hours.

K-12 Art Education Endorsement
This endorsement requires a teaching major in K-8, 7-12 or K-12 and passage of the appropriate PRAXIS II test. The following courses are only suggested content in preparation for exceeding the minimum score of PRAXIS series test. These classes are not required for this endorsement; see your adviser or the education department chair for any clarification.

101 Introduction to Basic Design 3 hours F,S
This foundation course explores the basic principles and elements of design using a variety of graphic mediums and elementary drawing skills. This is a studio course requiring extended hours.

120 Art Appreciation 3 hours F
This is an introductory lecture course focusing on the theoretical, cultural and historic aspects of visual arts. Emphasis is on the development of visual and aesthetic awareness.

203 Ceramics I 3 hours TBA
This foundation course develops basic skills in hand building, glazing and the potter’s wheel to create pottery and sculpture. This is a studio course requiring extended hours.

204 Introduction to Sculpture 3 hours TBA
This course develops the fundamental skills of sculpture in a variety of mediums with an emphasis on basic techniques and creative expression. Media may include clay, wood, metal and/or plaster. This is a studio course requiring extended hours.

This foundation course develops basic darkroom techniques and explores black and white photography as applied art and as an art form. This is a studio course requiring extended hours.

206 Drawing I 3 hours F,S
This foundation course develops basic skills of drawing in a variety of mediums. The course explores perspective, still life, landscape and introduction to figure drawing. This is a studio course that requires extended hours.

207 Printmaking I 3 hours TBA
This foundation studio course in the art of printmaking varies each semester and may include intaglio, woodcut, linoleum block, monoprints, dry point or colograph serigraphy. This is a studio course requiring extended hours.
Prerequisite: ART 206 or consent of instructor.

299 Selected Topics - Basic 1-3 hours TBA

302 Graphics II 3 hours S
Students will study how to create still images and deal with them technically and artistically through scanning, digitizing and manipulation. Created graphics will be incorporated into printed documents, presentations, videos and Web pages.
Prerequisite: ART 202 or consent of instructor.

303 Ceramics II 3 hours TBA
This course broadens the foundations of ART 203 and includes instruction of kiln operation, stressing the conceptual and expressive potential of clay. This is a studio course requiring extended hours.
Prerequisite: ART 203 or consent of instructor.

305 Photography II 3 hours F,S
This course expands basic darkroom techniques and explores photography as applied art and as an art form. Current and future digital photography processes are also explored. This is a studio course requiring extended hours.
Prerequisite: ART 205 or consent of instructor.

306 Drawing II 3 hours F,S
This studio course broadens the foundations of drawing as well as encourages exploration of more sophisticated compositional issues. This is a studio course requiring extended hours.
Prerequisite: ART 206 or consent of instructor.

307 Printmaking II 3 hours TBA
This course expands areas of printmaking that vary each semester and may include intaglio, monoprints, mixed media and lithography. This is a studio course requiring extended hours.
Prerequisite: ART 207 or consent of instructor.

315 Painting I 3 hours F,S
This foundation course develops basic skills in painting. Students will work primarily in watercolor and acrylics. This is a studio course requiring extended hours.
Prerequisite: ART 206.

330 Art History I 3 hours S
This course surveys the enduring monuments, periods, styles and artists in the history of art from prehistoric times through the Renaissance.

This course surveys the important monuments, periods, styles and artists in the history of art from the Renaissance to present day.

357 Art Education Methods 3 hours TBA
In this course students will examine art instruction methods for the elementary and secondary levels (K-12), emphasizing art curriculum planning, motivational strategies, art room management and methods of evaluation in art.
Prerequisites: EDU 315 and SPD 206.
Corequisites: EDU 300 and EDU 330.

415 Painting II 3 hours F,S
This course expands upon the techniques introduced in ART 315 and emphasizes the expressive and conceptual potential of painting. This is a studio course requiring extended hours.
Prerequisite: ART 315 or consent of instructor.

450 Internship 1-3 hours F,S
Students may pursue internships in art with the consent of the chair of the department.
Prerequisite: Consent of department chair.

456 Seminar in Art 3 hours TBA
This seminar course focuses on development of a digital portfolio in conjunction with the student’s Senior Art Show. The student is responsible for scheduling, advertising, and hanging the show. Student will also create a digital portfolio and identify package.
Prerequisite: Senior standing and an art major/minor with consent of department chair.

460 Independent Study 1-3 hours F,S
Students may independently study areas of art not covered by regular offerings.
Prerequisite: Junior or senior standing and an art major/minor with consent of department chair.

499 Selected Topics - Advanced 1-3 hours TBA
