The National English Honor Society
Sigma
Tau Delta is a national English honor society founded at Dakota Wesleyan
University in 1924. The purpose of Sigma Tau Delta is to “promote
the mastery of written expression, to encourage worthwhile reading, and
to foster a spirit of fellowship among those specializing in English.”
Judson Q. Owen, the founder of Sigma Tau Delta, sponsored the English
Club at DWU in the early 1920s. He was a young professor teaching at DWU
and working on his doctorate in his spare time. His interest in his profession
and the success of the English club on Wesleyan’s campus attracted
inquiries from other campuses around the nation. From this interest, Sigma
Tau Delta emerged.

The Sigma Tau Delta Song
Words by Mildred Knebel, DWU Alpha Chapter
Come, let us sing the praises
Of one whose fair name we share
Sigma Tau Delta, we covet
A place in thy ranks so fair
And we who would merit this honor
Must pledge our allegiance fine
To the motto of Sigma Tau Delta,
Sincerity, Truth, Design |
