Dial Up Networking Windows 2000

Obtain your account information
Email the helpdesk with your request.

First you need to configure ‘Dial up Networking’ on your system:
 

1. Open the ‘My computer’ icon
2. Open the ‘Dial up networking’ icon. If you do not have a ‘Dial up networking’ icon, goto the ‘Installing Dial up networking' section of this document.
3. Click on ‘Make new connection’
4. Enter the name ‘DWU’ for the new connection, choose which modem you will use, then click ‘Next’
5. Enter the phone number to dial and click ‘Next’.
6. Click ‘Finish’.  You may need to insert your Windows disk.
7. Right click on the newly created connection icon, select ‘properties’ from the list
8. Click on the ‘Server Types’ tab at the top of the selection window
9. Verify the following options (if listed)   are NOT checked:
     ‘Software compression’ should not be checked
     ‘Netbeui’ should not be checked
     ‘Ipx/spx compatible’ should not be checked
10. Click ‘OK’ to close the configuration window
     
Verify the ‘Dial up adapter’ installation:
1. Open ‘My computer’ , then ‘Control Panel’ , then double-click the ‘Network’ icon
2. You should see an entry called ‘TCP/IP' -> dial up adapter’
3. Close the Network window
4. Close the Control Panel window
5. Open ‘My computer’ then open ‘Dial up networking’
6. Click on ‘DWU’ with the RIGHT mouse button.
7. Choose ‘properties’
8. Click on the ‘Server type’ tab
9. The type should be: ‘type:ppp’
     
MAKING THE CONNECTION
To make the connection:
1. Open ‘My computer’ then open ‘Dial up networking’
2. Double click the ‘DWU’ icon to start the connection process.
3. Enter your remote access ‘user name’.  (This will be the same as your network login name)
4. Enter your remote access ‘password’.  (This is assigned to you.)
5. Click ‘Connect’ and your modem should connect to DWU.
6. Once connected, minimize the connection window if needed.  You should now be able to use your web browser and email clients like you were on campus.  Please keep in mind that you are using a phone modem, and as such, the access speed will be considerably slower.
     
INSTALLING DIAL UP NETWORKING
1. Open ‘My Computer’ then open ‘Add/Remove programs’
2. Click on the ‘Windows setup’ tab
3. Click on the ‘Communications’ line to highlight this option
4. Click on the ‘Details’ button
5. Place a check in the box next to ‘Dial up networking’ and click on the ‘OK’ button
6. Click the ‘OK’ button on the ‘Add/Remove program properties’ window
7. Close the ‘Control Panel’ window
8. Go back to the ‘initial setup’ section of this document
