Mail Scanning and
Filtering
Email Scanning at the network gateway
gives you the power to control what enters or leaves via email.
As email becomes the most important channel for Universities communication,
scanning of message traffic is increasingly recognized as a necessary
component of network protection. Common goals of email scanning are to block
Spam, to stop viruses and other threats, and to ensure that email usage
meets the organization's Acceptable Use Policy.
All email sent from, and received by the DWU mail server is scanned for
virus and unacceptable attachments.
Any email message found that matches a scanning rule is deleted by the mail
server, or may have the attachment removed.
Some common examples of email attachments that will be blocked:
attachments with more than one file extension-(example assignment.friday.doc) attachments that are executable, or system files-(example screensaver.scr or
install.exe) email with embedded html executable code email attachments with current virus definitions
