USB Removable Storage Devices
-
A.K.A., The "New Floppy
Disk" -
Many of the
computers on campus do not contain 3 1/2" floppy disk drives.
Computer Services recommends saving your files to your (H:) Personal File
Server. If you need portable storage, we recommend USB data storage keys in
place of 3 ½ floppy disk.
USB Removable Storage Devices offer the following great perks:
-
Come in sizes 16MB, 32MB, 64MB, 128MB, 256MB, and up (a
typical floppy holds around 1.4MB)
About the size of a lighter; most models can be attached to
a lanyard or a keychain for convenient transportation
-
Floppies can be easily corrupted due to their vulnerable
design, while USB mass storage is sturdier and less affected by
outside elements
-
Will work on any PC with Windows 98 or later and a USB port
(generally speaking, any machine made within the last five years will meet
these criteria)
-
Most models can be password-protected, ensuring that no one
can access your important documents except you
-
Much faster than transferring information from one computer
to another via CD or floppy
