Finding Aid: American Civil War


 

The following selective list of print and online resources has been compiled by McGovern Library staff as a starting point for research on the Civil War. It is not a complete listing of related materials held by McGovern Library or available online, but is intended to serve as a guide to some of the Library's resources, and as a pointer to a variety of electronic resources.

  • Making of America: Full text of primary sources in American social history from the antebellum period through reconstruction (1850-1877).
    • Search for keywords, proper names, places, etc.  Use Advanced Search options to focus your search.
  • Ancestry.com (On-campus access only)
    • Includes the Slave Narratives collection (stories, songs, folk medicine, voting, etc.), as well as a Civil War Research Database and Pension Index searchable by specific soldiers, officers, and/or regiments.
  • LexisNexis Primary Sources in U.S. History
    • Subject term searches using "Civil War" in combination with specific names/places/events and or documents.
  • EBSCO Fulltext Databases: abstracts, citations and full text articles
    • Keyword searches for period specific terms such as "Carpetbaggers," or combination such as "Civil War," with specific names and/or places such as "William Davis," "Mary Todd Lincoln ," "Manassas," "Bull Run," etc.
  • Proquest : abstracts, citations and full text articles
