Dr. Michael
Catalano
micatala@dwu.edu
Mike Catalano, professor of mathematics, has been a member
of the DWU faculty since 1992 and served as acting vice president
for academic affairs and dean from 1998 to 2000. He has authored
a number of grants including a National Science Foundation grant
which supported the development of a new college algebra text
and the acquisition of a mobile laptop computer lab used for
the course.
Dr. Catalano has his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University
of Minnesota, and his B.A. from St. Olaf College. He is a member
of the Mathematical Association of America, Phi Beta Kappa,
Phi Kappa Phi, Sigma Zeta and Project Kaleidoscope’s Faculty
for the 21st Century.

Dr. Rocky
Von Eye

Rochelle “Rocky” Von Eye earned her B.S. and M.S.
degrees from South Dakota State University in mathematics and
computer science, and her doctorate is from University of South Dakota. Dr. Von Eye
has been at DWU since 1984, teaching courses in computer science
and mathematics. She has also been assistant academic dean and
acting vice president for academic affairs. In addition to teaching
courses in the mathematics department, she is also dean of the
Donna Starr Christen College of Healthcare, Fitness and Sciences.
Dr. Von Eye has received the Presidential Award for Excellence
in mathematics teaching, and a Kellogg National Leadership Fellowship.

Dr. Michael
N. Farney
mifarney@dwu.edu
Mike Farney received his B.S. and M.A. degrees in physics.
He earned his doctorate in science education. Dr. Farney has
been at DWU since 1979 and currently teaches courses in physics,
mathematics and astronomy, as well as an interdisciplinary course
in general education along with Mike Catalano.
Dr. Farney runs the South Central South Dakota Science and
Engineering Fair. Since 1996, his science fair students have
won numerous awards and scholarships at the International Science
and Engineering Fair.

Dr. Joan
Lubben
jolubben@dwu.edu
Joan Lubben completed her Ph.D. degree in 2009 from the University
of Nebraska at Lincoln, and she has a B.A. degree in geology
from Rice University in Texas. At UNL she was awarded the Outstanding
Teaching by Graduate Student award. Her doctoral thesis was
entitled “Modeling and Analysis of Biological Population,”
and her ongoing research interests include developing population
models that can be used to guide management of populations of
both plants and animals, help control invasive species, and
improve the viability of endangered or threatened species.
Dr. Lubben is a member of the Mathematical Association of America,
the American Mathematical Society, the Ecological Society of
America, the Society for Mathematical Biology, the Association
for Women in Mathematics, and the Society for Industrial and
Applied Mathematics.
