A celebration of
cultural entrepreneurship in South Dakota Entrepreneurs play a critical role in community and culture. Many established businesses – including some of our very largest – were started on a shoestring by a man or woman who felt comfortable with risk and responsibility, who had the confidence to fail, and who had the creativity and gumption to succeed. Should we encourage entrepreneurism? Should we work harder to identify it, just as we look about for the best quarterback, or the best actress, or the best debater? We believe so. To encourage entrepreneurism within our communities, a special celebration of cultural entrepreneurship in South Dakota will be held Friday, September 7th, at Cedar Shore Resort in Chamberlain. A special project to help communities identify and encourage these innovative risk-takers was launched in January 2007. We asked communities to identify some of South Dakota’s top fledgling entrepreneurs of today and nominate them to be honored and recognized for their valued contributions. Our celebration will include part of the day being devoted to honoring the selected recipients of the 2007 Magnificent Seven Awards (South Dakota’s top fledgling entrepreneurs). These Magnificent Seven Awardees represent the entrepreneurial spirit that adds so much to South Dakota life. The celebration will also include two separate panel discussions: How to Identify the Mavericks (Entrepreneurs) in Your Community, and How Mavericks Jump the Fence (how do these entrepreneurs succeed where others stumble?). This event is a joint project of the South Dakota Hall of Fame, South Dakota Magazine, Kilian Community College, McGovern Center for Leadership and Public Service and the Kelley Center for Entrepreneurship-Dakota Wesleyan University.
