Sheinbaum is recipient of McGovern Prize for Peace and Public Service

MITCHELL, S.D. – Stanley K. Sheinbaum, Los Angeles, is the first recipient of the George S. McGovern Prize for Peace and Public Service.

Sheinbaum has served on numerous boards including the International Center for Peace in the Middle East, Americans for Peace Now, the Bill of Rights Foundation of New York, the Center for Law in the Public Interest of Los Angeles, and the American Jewish Committee of Los Angeles.

He is the chair and founding publisher of New Perspectives Quarterly, a world-class journal of social and political thought that focuses on current affairs. Sheinbaum’s most widely known peace efforts were in 1988, when he led a five-person delegation of American Jews to persuade Yassir Arafat to deliver a speech to the United Nations denouncing terrorism and recognizing Israel.

Sheinbaum’s colleagues, friends, associates, and even his occasional critics describe him as a strategic leader of the progressive Jewish movement, a voice of conscience, an advocate for peace, and always addicted to fairness and justice. Because Sheinbaum has devoted his life and diverse talents to serving humanity and advocating global peace, DWU officials representing the George and Eleanor McGovern Center for Leadership and Public Service honored Sheinbaum in May.

The awards event was hosted in Los Angeles by Norman Lear and was attended by celebrities including Warren Beaty and Annette Benning. DWU President Bob Duffett, vice president for advancement Greg Christy and former Sen. George McGovern attended the event.
