June 26, 2006 McGovern Library dedication schedule announced MITCHELL, S.D. – DWU announces the schedule for the Oct. 5-7 dedication of the George and Eleanor McGovern Library and Center for Leadership and Public Service. Dignitaries from Pierre to Washington, D.C., are expected and citizens from around the region are invited to join in the weekend’s events. Legendary 60s folk musicians Peter, Paul and Mary will kick off the celebration with a concert at the World’s Only Corn Palace at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 5. George and Eleanor McGovern will join them on stage to reminisce about their earlier days. Tickets are on sale at the Corn Palace Box Office Aug. 1. Confirmed guests for Friday’s lectures in the Sherman Center include Catherine Bertini, Jeffrey D. Sachs, and Dusty Johnson. A panel discussion about the opportunities and rewards of choosing a life of public service and leadership will also be held. The public is invited to all of these lectures free of charge. DWU and the McGoverns will recognize financial supporters who made the library a reality at Friday evening’s donor banquet. Bob Dole will accept the first McGovern Award for Leadership and Public Service. Contact the advancement office for information on contributing to the library’s endowment fund (995-2603). This event is by invitation only. Saturday, Oct. 7 marks the official dedication of the George and Eleanor McGovern Library and Center for Leadership and Public Service. Local, regional and national leaders will help celebrate the McGoverns’ legacy. The 147th Army Band Brass Quintet will provide the music at this patriotic event on the library lawn. Kory and the Fireflies will entertain during the community barbeque following the dedication ceremony. The public is invited to the dedication, barbeque and concert free of charge. The final event of the dedication is the South Dakota premier of the film, “One Bright Shining Moment: The Forgotten Summer of George McGovern,” highlighting McGovern’s 1972 presidential campaign. Producer Stephen Vittoria and George McGovern will introduce the film at the Luxury 5 Cinemas. Tickets will be available at the door. Tours of the McGovern Library will be offered throughout the weekend. All are invited to explore this expansive facility, which houses the McGovern Legacy display, the DWU library and bookstore, the DWU and Methodist Dakotas Conference archives, and the Java City coffee counter. The library is also home to the student success center, smart classrooms and media center. South Dakota artist Jon Crane will create the official painting of the McGovern Library.
