McLaird honored for Calamity Jane history

MITCHELL – Jim McLaird, professor emeritus of history at Dakota Wesleyan University, was recently honored for his book, “Calamity Jane: The Woman and the Legend.”

Westerners International awarded McLaird the Co-Founders Book Award Best Non-Fiction Book Published in 2005. The award was presented at the Western History Association Conference in St. Louis, Mo., on Oct. 14.

McLaird was also a finalist for the Spur Award in the category of Best Western Non-Fiction – Biography by the Western Writers of America Inc. in the 2006 WWA Awards Competition. Winners of the Spur Awards in previous years include Larry McMurtry for “Lonesome Dove,” Michael Blake for “Dances With Wolves,” Glendon Swarthout for “The Shootist,” and Tony Hillerman for “Skinwalker.”
