DWU to celebrate Blue & White Days

MITCHELL – Several activities open to the community have been planned for the annual two-day Blue & White Days homecoming celebration later this month at Dakota Wesleyan University.

The Opperman Lecture is set for 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 29, in the Sherman Center. Carla Berg, a native of Emery, S.D., and 2001 DWU graduate, will present the lecture. She is currently completing a one-year residency program at Harvard Medical School in the area of positive psychology and health psychology. Her presentation is “Fostering Hope for the Journey Down Roads Less Traveled.” The lecture is free.

Following the Opperman Lecture, attorney Shannon Doering, a 1996 graduate of DWU, will be honored with the Young Alumnus of the Year award. A luncheon is planned at noon in the East Main Dining Room of the campus center. Doering currently serves as general counsel for NEBCO Inc., and affiliated companies in Lincoln, Neb. There is a fee for the luncheon; contact the alumni office at 995-2603 for details.

The DWU women’s volleyball team plays the Concordia University Bulldogs at 6 p.m. in the Christen Family Recreation/Wellness Center. This event is free.

Topping off the activities for Friday is an All-Alumni Reunion Gathering set for 7 p.m. poolside at the Holiday Inn in Mitchell. Food and door prizes will be provided. All alumni of the university are invited.

The Blue & White Days Parade will make its way down Mitchell’s Main Street beginning at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 30. The theme of this year’s parade is “Once Upon a Time.” The DWU Alumni Association will host a breakfast tent in the CorTrust Bank parking lot on north Main Street from 9-11 a.m. All alumni, spouses and families are invited and welcome to stay in the tent and watch the parade.

After the parade, the Alumni Association will host a tailgate party at noon in the parking lot at Joe Quintal Field. The DWU Tigers take on the Mustangs of Morningside College at 1:30 p.m.

DWU athletes are also competing in the following venues on Saturday:

  • Men’s golf at the Palace City Classic, Wild Oak Golf Club
  • Women’s soccer vs. Concordia University Bulldogs at 1 p.m. at Cadwell Park
  • Men’s soccer vs. Concordia University Bulldogs at 3 p.m. at Cadwell Park
  • Women’s volleyball vs. Hastings College Broncos at 5:30 p.m. at the Christen Family Recreation/Wellness Center
