Aug. 3, 2007 DWU FTO students participate in Outreach to Teach in Philadelphia MITCHELL – Four students from DWU’s Future Teachers Organization attended the annual NEA Student Leadership Conference in Philadelphia in June. DWU students Kristi Anderson, Hitchcock; Amanda Fitzgerald, Philip; Angela Gardeman, Mitchell; and Mackenzie Kusser, Pierre; were among the more than 300 college students, teachers, retired educators, higher education faculty and education support professionals who descended upon a Norristown, Pa., school to provide a much-needed facelift. Volunteers grabbed a hammer, shovel, brush or mop to repair, landscape, paint, clean and decorate the school. “It was an amazing experience for us to go and be a part of such a huge makeover,” said Anderson. “At the end of the day, it was truly rewarding to see the transformation we made throughout the entire school, inside and out. For the first time ever, the students at that school will be able to play on grass when they go outside for recess.” The award-winning Outreach to Teach is celebrating its 12th year of community service. Each year, a high-needs public school located in the host city of the NEA annual meeting is selected to receive a free makeover.
